Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Severine Arend. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Severine, appreciate you joining us today. We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
As a non binary individual, being able to provide services for other trans and non binary folks, the work feels so important. As a hairstylist I feel that the way you present starts with your crown. Our hair (whether it be our own or fun with wigs, extensions or hair pieces) can transform us into that soft femme person we’ve always desired to present to the world or that masc king that you feel in your heart. Being able to achieve the hairstyle that best fits my clients inner self feels so rewarding.
Severine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Sev and I am a non binary hair artist in San Francisco. I found hair by way of portrait photography and I have loved every minute since (that being 9 years now). I love and breathe hair, especially the more niche hairstyles that belong to alt scenes. I am proficient with a straight razor and love a good dye job!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When you’re beginning any career, you’re probably working minimum wage and you’re barely surviving, which isn’t as inspiring to continue on with the journey that you’ve chose, especially as a creative individual. However, after two years of working very hard on an apprenticeship, I finally graduated to the next level as a junior stylist. During this time, I was figuring out my own style and understanding which kind of hair I enjoy doing. But the road was long and hard so I feel for a lot of people who are just starting out in careers that require apprenticeships. Nonetheless there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and it’s worth it.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being a people pleaser, I innately want to achieve every goal that a client brings in for me. So having to learn the difference between what I am able to achieve with the limits and skill set that I have acquired, was always very hard for me. But now, after nine years of being in the business, I have acquired so many different skills that I didn’t have in the beginning that now I have the confidence with the skill set to back at to provide the best customer service as well as the best hair that I can give.
