We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sevda Javandideh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sevda, thanks for joining us today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. So, we’d appreciate if you could open up about your growth story and the nitty, gritty details that went into scaling up.
The biggest and most important step to scaling up your business is to “believe that you deserve more and that you can have what you want”. Passion and persistency can take you many places and keep you moving forward when others will quit trying,
When I first started my design business, I knew that I had a vision and a passion for my work, but I wasn’t sure how to turn that into success. It wasn’t until I truly believed that I was worthy of success and capable of achieving my dreams that I was able to scale up and place myself among the best designers in Los Angeles.
But it wasn’t just my self-belief that got me there. It was also the practical steps that I took to build my business. I planned for the future, built a strong team, leveraged technology to work smarter, invested in my marketing and branding, and managed my finances carefully to ensure sustainable growth.
One of the most critical factors in my success as a designer has been making meaningful connections and collaborations with like-minded individuals who share my vision and values. I networked with purpose, sought out opportunities that aligned with my goals, and learned to say “no” to those that didn’t.
Sevda, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I firmly believe that the spaces we inhabit have a profound impact on our lives. Our surroundings can shape how we feel, think, and behave on a daily basis, ultimately influencing our personalities, lifestyles, and overall quality of life. As an interior designer, I see it as my mission to use my expertise to create spaces that have a positive impact on my clients’ well-being and state of mind.
By carefully considering factors such as lighting, color, texture, and layout, I can create spaces that promote comfort, inspiration, and relaxation. Whether it’s a luxurious residential space or a functional work environment. Every space has the potential to transform the way we feel and experience the world. By harnessing the power of design to create spaces that reflect my clients’ unique personalities and lifestyles, I aim to make a positive impact on their well-being and quality of life.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was the idea that success in my field was solely based on individual talent and hard work, and that I could control every aspect of a project from start to finish.
Early on in my career, I had a project where I was working with a contractor who had a different approach to construction than I did. I thought that if I just worked harder and put in more effort, I could force the project to turn out the way I wanted it to. However, despite my best efforts, I was not able to get the contractor to deliver the project the way I had envisioned it.
This experience taught me that there are some aspects of a project that are outside of my control. For example, the cost of goods can change unexpectedly, or a contractor may have a different approach to construction that I don’t agree with. I realized that in order to be successful, I needed to learn to be flexible and adapt to the situations that arose.
I also learned that it’s important to work with people who share your vision and values. Since that experience, I’ve made a point to choose contractors and suppliers who understand my design style and are willing to work collaboratively to achieve the best possible outcome for the project.
By unlearning the idea that I could control everything, I’ve become a better designer and collaborator. I now know that success in my field requires a combination of individual talent, hard work, flexibility, and the ability to work effectively with others.
