We recently connected with Seun Adegoke and have shared our conversation below.
Seun, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew I was a creative from the age of 10. I went to boarding school in Africa and back then I would assemble all my friends and share fictional stories with them. They would be so attentive from start to finish and I had an ever growing audience. That was when I realized that I have the gift of entertaining in me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Seun and I host different kinds of events like weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, store and book launches, empowerment events, birthdays and so on. I started my entertainment career in Television. I used to host Television shows and red carpet events in Africa. At the time, I did not like the direction of the entertainment industry and I quickly got discouraged and quit. I later found a different path in Emceeing and I have not looked back ever since. My style of hosting is very interactive and I rely on audience participation. This is what sets me apart. I am also unique because I am a female working in a male dominated industry. Looking back, I am most proud of my drive and determination. I have never let anyone discourage me or stop me. I have faced my share of disappointments but I dont let them stop me or get to me. I want potential clients to know that when they hire me for their events, they are hiring an Emcee who is truly passionate about her craft. They are hiring an Emcee who is less about the money but more about the work. Potential clients can find me on instagram @seuncompere or on my website at www.allthingsseun.com
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
As a female in a male dominated industry, I sometimes get picked over my male counterparts. Often times I hear, the client likes your work but they would much rather a male Emcee. As discouraging as that may sound, it encourages me to keep going. I am reminded that I am breaking barriers day in day out and creating my own niche.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As a child (before the age of 10) lacked confidence and had low self esteem. I was extremely thin and dorky. I had brown hair and a huge head. I saw myself as ugly. I would walk into a room and hide in the back of the room. I could never look at people in the eyes. I eventually broke out of that shell and I found my voice. It is my goal and mission to be a role model to every girl child that may be stuck in that shell. I hope that through my story and my work, that they can overcome their shyness and see themselves as beautiful and enough.
