We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Seth Lejeune a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Seth, thanks for joining us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
I used to think taking a vacation would be a “death pill” to my business. I mean, how could someone possibly replace me while I was gone. Earlier in my career I went to Europe with family and had very little access to internet or phone while I was away from my Airbnb’s internet. I was a solo agent at the time, but I soon realized that since I had told all of my clients I would be away and had an associate dealing with any “emergencies” that things actually went ok. Now that I’m much more mature, I realize that if someone can’t wait for me or is not understanding that I need break (especially with how I work when I’m in the country), they’re not worth working with any. Buh-bye.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Seth Lejeune and I’m the leader of the SLG Team powered by RE/MAX outside of Philadelphia, PA. We are a close-knit group of 8 agents currently specializing in first-time home buyers and upsizers (those who have to buy and sell). I got into real estate after leaving the family business (golf club management) after my wife had a bout with Stage IIb breast cancer (9 years in remission). Hospitality and families don’t really mix so I needed to pivot to something where I could make more money and more importantly make my own schedule.
Using both our Millenniup Method and Clear Skies Method, we have developed a proven system to help the younger generations of real estate consumers. It’s hard out there now with the current state of the market and we bring a very high level of competence and experience to our client’s doorstep. We have an internal motto of “no hackassery” within The SLG.. It is my way of more or less reminding my agents that there is little room for incompetence or “winging it”. This work is too important.
We take this business VERY seriously, especially with the demographic in which we specialize. This is a big deal to our clients so it’s a big deal to us.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Social media and old-school networking (Both forms of networking but also very different). In both settings, I bring constant value and education to my spheres. It’s so important to be seen as knowing what you’re talking about. Especially in real estate where agents aren’t trusted too much.
Any advice for managing a team?
I am the owner of The SLG Team and we have an amazing culture despite a very tough market bc we meet and we don’t shy away from bringing other aspects of our lives to those meetings. Being a real estate agent is really difficult at times and there is no sense in pushing my team members if there is trouble at home or with their health. I create a safe zone for people to come with their problems and collaborate so that we are like a big family. Everyone has something they’re dealing with and I find that the younger generations aren’t interested in compartmentalizing their business and personal lives. That being said, there is a limit and we must get to work too, but people sharing their experiences and struggles has increased relatability and connectivity within the group.
