We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Seth Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Seth below.
Seth, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Most of us dream of a day we can hang up our day jobs and devote all we are to our creative passions. Just shy of five years ago at a dive bar on the Rouge River in Southern Oregon I had my moment.
I was sitting with my wife catching up after a long day when the band showed up to bring the entertainment for the evening. After taking the stage it became clear fast that the lead man was extremely intoxicated and couldn’t even speak clearly.
He was defiantly out of tune and so was his guitar.
The most surprising thing to us that night was that he just kept going, no one stopped him and it never improved.
That was the moment for both my wife and I that we realized ‘If he can do it, we can do it’
The next day we got busy calling every location we could find in Southern OR that had ever had live music performed and started booking shows.
We definitely didn’t feel ready to start a creative business. We didn’t have any equipment or gear. We’d never tried to do our own musical thing before and we had no idea if we could actually survive, but playing music professionally had been a dream of mine my entire life. So we dropped everything and went for it.
That was the end of 2019. By early 2020 we had booked a staggering 150 shows, then Covid.
We ended up playing 98 shows that year despite all the ups and downs the world was going through and guess what, we survived.
We are now closing in on our fifth year of full time travel, full time music and making our living exclusively from live performance, merchandise, book and album sales.
I knew when I was around ten years old that making music for the world was what I was made for.
These past nearly five years of being a professional musician has only confirmed one thing, Making music for the world is what I was made for.
Seth, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Growing up in a large family surrounded by music, I began playing hand drums and singing at age five. At age ten I learned my first guitar chord and never put it down again. At age ten I also wrote my first song. When I was fourteen I took up piano as well.
I always found a way to keep music alive throughout my life and work and school. I wrote songs to help me process life and find answers to all that had no answers.
I moved away from home at sixteen and lived all over the country, eventually even going over seas and spending extended time in Africa, India and a few years down in Mexico.
After retuning to the states I moved to Nashville TN where I did a lot of studio work and played for other artists but still worked my 9-5.
I met my wife there and four years later we moved back to Oregon where I am from.
Life took some unexpected turns and at the end of 2018 we sold our home in Oregon and left everything behind for a new life.
We put all we owned into a 1998 Astro Van and hit the open road to find ourselves and what this life was all about.
It was this life change that brought back to the surface my undying passion for song writing and live performance.
The open road brought us much needed clarity and helped us define a lot. It was at the end of 2019 we launched our full blown music business (Brown Entertainment)
Our life now is touring our original music all over the country and getting paid well to do so. My wife Desiree is also a writer and author. Her book ‘Desy’s Diaries Awakening to the Alternative’ tells the honest journey of leaving the traditional life style and what that first year on the road really looked like.
Along this journey our goal at Brown Entertainment has come down to simply ‘Bringing good music and good stories to good people’
We keep a fun story running in mostly real time for our friends and fans over at ‘Seth Brown Duo’ on FB, IG, and of course www.sethbrownduo.com
We find continual inspiration for our live shows and new songs and books as we travel and meet all kinds of wonderful folks along the way.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For a lot of my life I could only dream of being an artist, now that I am one full time I find that it’s still the same little things that first drew me in. I still pick up my guitar in my pajamas in my living room in the morning and fully enjoy creating music.
One thing that being a touring and active artist has also provided is the opportunity to meet and spend time with so many people that I would have otherwise never known.
Lastly I find myself very fortunate to be able to share this life with my wife who is also a great musician, singer and writer. Being able to do this together has been the best part of it all.
I love my wife, I love music and I love people, so the rewards are pretty much endless
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
We started this business in the back of a 1992 Class C motorhome as we traveled the country. We lived full time on the road for the past four and a half years. We broke into dozens of new markets and started over time and time again. Every place we went was a totally new beginning. Every place we went we kept growing and excelling further ahead. My wife Desy works endlessly to keep the calendar full of shows and a million other things to keep the business floating. Together we make a good team and altho some days we both truly feel like giving up we just remember life before our dreams, then we get back to work.
