We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sesame Morrison a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sesame , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, what do you think about family businesses? Would you want your children or other family members to one day join your business?
I absolutely love the idea of having a family business. I believe creating jobs around your family’s needs and desires is a luxury. I have three young daughters whom I would love to share not only my business with but also work alongside the people who mean the most to me. Building an empire that your kids, grandkids and great grandkids can have access to is incredible.
Sesame , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Sesame Morrison, Realtor in great state of state Texas! While I refer to myself as a “professional hand holder” I assist people with their real estate needs. The goal of my business is to educate people on how to obtain and maintain their residential real estate assets.
I am most proud of grabbing hope by the hands and pursing a career that comes with tons of risk.
I want for anyone who comes across this article to know that while creating solutions and being a resource partner in the residential real estate industry I am wholeheartedly dedicated to using my platform to remind others of God’s goodness.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Real Estate is the industry of relationships. Your business simply does not work without people. Building relationships and being kind is what has helped build my reputation within my market. Sure being knowledgeable and and having sales are assets in being seen but the way you make people feel is what helps establish the reputation.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
In each and every deal I always ask the Lord to show himself throughout the transaction and boy, does he not disappoint. There was one time I was serving as the listing agent on a transaction but also representing them to buy in a second transaction. COVID had just hit the streets so I was adjusting and getting acclimated to doing private showings every 15 mins and ensuring all the things like “Are people wearing gloves? Did they sanitize? Did I wipe counters? Does everyone have on a mask? etc” because the sellers didn’t want anyone in the home without me and not for over 20 mins at a time. Scary times. Well we receive multiple offers first day of going live on the MLS. Majority were over asking and all was just going well. My sellers decided to accept an offer and we go under contract. Fast forward to the day before closing – I receive a phone call from the Title company letting me know that we cannot close because there is a deed restriction. This particular deed restriction was due to a grant given to obtain the property. The sellers were supposed to stay in their home for 15 years before they could sell and we were on year 7!
Mind you, at this time my clients have moved out and into an airbnb because their new home, which is contingent upon the sale of this house, is being built and they have a closing coming up within the next 8 weeks or so. Receiving that phone call almost sent me into a frenzy but I am a problem solver. I get the information needed to reach out the entity thats stopping the sale and they explain how there is nothing they can do. Now I have an upset client and an infuriated buyers agent who is calling me everything but the child of God.
After about 2 days of calling around we finally get someone who gives us an option. We explained how seller was unaware and the grantor didn’t do the best job of notifying and ensuring info was up to date and this particular rep figured out a way to help us. We (myself and buyers agent) spoke on the phone about two hours with this rep figuring out numbers and ways to get permission to make this sale happen. We figured out a way that satisfied the buyer and seller but we had to reduce the sales price significantly and extend closing for an additional 2 weeks.
This two week waiting period felt like a year! The title company, my broker or my coach had never seen/heard of such a thing happening. I had no one to help me through this in my profession. I prayed with my mother and a few others and my Mom told me to just “be quiet”. If you know me I am a talker. I need to feel like something is being done immediately or I would flip out. My Mom explained that sometimes in order for God to do him we have to hush and just wait. so for 10 days I didnt speak about the situation. I didnt complain or continue to ask questions I just asked for my client to have the 10% if faith and I would have the 90%. Day 11 we received news that restriction had been lifted and we could proceed with closing.
My clients as of today are living in their second home with 3x the space going on 4 years now!
