We were lucky to catch up with Sergio Gaitan Md Faad recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sergio, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
About 1 year and a half ago I decided to start my own Dermatology practice. I wanted to improve on all the things I did not like about the current practice of Dermatology. Studying engineering in College, I wanted to design from scratch a Dermatology practice designed around the patient experience. The first steps I had to take was on deciding whether I wanted to take insurance. Practicing in the past with Insurance, I felt limited in what I could provide for my patients. So, I decided to make a self-pay dermatology practice in Miami, Fl where everyone would have access to a dermatologist. The main challenge without taking insurance is where our patients would come from. So, we focused on making sure that our patient experience was elite. We have no wait time for our patients. We offer transparent pricing, and easy online booking. We also have access to the latest Laser Technologies to treat the skin. Since staring my practice now, the only thing I would have done differently is that I would have been on social media earlier promoting the benefits of a self pay dermatology practice. My advice for a young professional that might be considering starting his own practice is to make sure they have something special they are offering the patient. The most important thing is to create value for your patients and focus on making sure the patient has the best experience.
Sergio, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Board Certified Dermatologist that practices in Miami, Florida. I studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Florida and then went to Medical School at Baylor College of Medicine. I then did my internship in San Diego at Scripps Mercy and completed my Residency in Dermatology at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. I then came to my hometown of Miami, FL and practiced Dermatology for 7 years before opening my own Dermatology office where I grew up in the West Kendall area of Miami, Florida.
We focus on patient centered Dermatology, giving access to a highly specialized field to everyone with no referral needed. What sets us apart is by not taking insurance we are able to offer the best for our patients with no outside restrictions. Medical Care has become so expensive, and the quality has decreased so much, we wanted to do something different and provide direct access to our patients with transparent pricing. What I’m most proud of is that in just 18 months we have been able to acquire the latest in Laser Technology to offer our patients so that we can help with common skin conditions like acne, melasma, rosacea, as well as skin rejuvenation. This would have never been possible taking insurance, as most insurances don’t even cover Laser treatments, despite the fact that they are more advanced and can provide better and faster results than typical treatments.
The key thing about Certified Cosmetics and Skin Care is that we are patient focused. So, we are all about providing the best treatments and experience for our patients. Our top priority is our patient’s wellbeing. We are able to achieve that because we are family owned and answer directly to the patient.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
The thing to be most successful in the field of Cosmetic Dermatology is to have empathy. Truly caring for your patient allows you to achieve more than just a technical result but to enrich the lives of our patients. We pride ourselves on having the latest technologies and being able to deliver results like no others. However, what matters the most to us is that our skin treatments bring happiness to our patients and enrich their life. We want our skin treatments to give our patients the confidence to do the things they have always wanted.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The thing that helped me build my reputation with my patients is that I take pride in always delivering. Most of my patients follow me when I switched practices in the past because of the type of care I provide. The other day I had the mom of one of my patient’s tell me ” We follow you wherever you go because you are the only Dermatologist that everything you have given us helped.” The reason is I am very science based. With my engineering background I don’t fall for all the hype that is around skin care. I only bring tried and true Products and Lasers to Certified Cosmetics and Skin Care. I do all the research and work so that our patients can benefit.
