Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sergio Castillo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Sergio thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, let’s start with a hypothetical – what would you change about the educational system?
It’s been a while since I’ve been in school, but from what I remember, I wish I would have enjoyed it a little more. Nothing can really prepare you for the real world until you experience it for yourself. So in my opinion, there are certain subjects that I wish were discussed moe in school.
To name a few, Starting a Business, Paying Taxes, Annual financial check ups, Managing Bank accounts, Retirement topics like IRA, 401k and the Stock market.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
To keep it brief, I have been a self-employed entrepreneur since 2008. The financial crisis turned out to be a blessing in disguise for me. I’ve been working for myself and have been blessed to have my family working with me for the past 10+ years. I started out as a nightclub promoter with Goodlife Miami. Then turned into a Graphic/Branding Agency currently La Familia Media. Founded with the late, great, Chris “Blaze” Rosales in 2014, La Familia Media has been providing small and large businesses, especially entrepreneurs brand themselves in a creative and professional manner.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
The late, Chris “Blaze” Rosales and I, founded La Familia Media in 2014, aimed to offer creative solutions such as Graphic and Web design. We actually met through my ex-wife, we were friends for years, and then went into business together. He was an amazing web designer. He would focus on web clients and I would focus on graphic design. Sadly, he passed away after years of battling health issues. He stayed positive and strong until the very end. Everyone who knew him will tell you how special Chris was. He gave me the opportunity to work for myself and helped kick start me into the world of entrepreneurialship.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
In 2008, you can say I was thrown out of an airplane and was forced to figure out how to land safely. After being let go from the banking industry after the 2008 financial crisis, the Miami nightlife would become my savior. The initial capital came from my 401k and stocks in the bank I was working for. It gave me the cushion I needed to kick start my marketing business and self-employed status.
