We were lucky to catch up with Serena Rae recently and have shared our conversation below.
Serena , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My new EP releases May 26th. It’s called, ‘WHY WE PARTY (20/20 Demos).’ I collaborated on the 4 songs with my brother and co-producer, Samson Colors, and our longtime friend, YB RICH. Usually I write on my own, but with this project, YB RICH made the beats while my brother and I wrote the lyrics and melodies. We tried to tell a story of all the different reasons why people party, to be accepted or faking it, to celebrate something or someone, when we are questioning life and who we are, or even to forget. I would consider it a concept EP. All of us have worked on our own individual projects so it was fun to bring our different genres together in one body of work.
Serena , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started singing, writing, and playing music at a young age. My family is very musical so I always grew up around music being played around the house and family gatherings. I took piano lessons when I was younger but then decided to learn guitar when I was a teenager and that’s when I really started developing my craft as a songwriter. I started putting up YouTube videos in middle school and then decided when I graduated high school to pursue music as a full-time career. I played my first shows in 2017, released my first single in 2018, and I’ve been doing gigs. writing, and releasing music ever since.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I have had to unlearn is that you have to follow the same journey as everyone else. Our society, from a very young age, tries to put restraints on what path each person should pursue based on image, money, or acceptance. This is a lesson I continue to unlearn and encourage anyone out there who wants to chase a dream or a passion. Do it! Don’t care what anyone says or thinks.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think most non-creatives don’t know how much work goes into being an artist. At whatever level of the journey creatives are on, it takes hours and hours of work whether in practicing, writing, producing, creating online content, even more work if you are an independent artist. It is a job and most non-creatives don’t see it like that.
