We recently connected with Serena Harris and have shared our conversation below.
Serena , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
How I got my first client. When I first started doing lashes of course I had no clients I did start off just practicing on a mannequin head, friends and family but it got to a pint where I wanted to try practicing my craft on others that aren’t familiar with me. At the time I had no customer service skills I did not know how to speak to people I was not verbal i was not a people’s person but I knew working on my family members and staying in my comfort zone was not going to get me far so I decided to take models I would post me practicing my craft on friends or a mannequin I would go in ladies DM’s and ask around who would be interested in being my model for practice free of charge. Most of my models I had paid me some just posted and referred people to me. After a while majority of my clients became loyal clients that I still have till this day.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Heyy My name is Serena Harris better known as Shaè CEO of MARKEDBYSHAE. Before I started as a lash tech I had a cosmetics line named Beautyshaè Cosmetics, I started Beautyshaè Line when I was working at sawgrass mall Charley’s Philly Cheesecake in the food court. I HATED IT (😂) I was already there for 3 full years putting in hours doing overtime just to make $800 every two weeks! I was miserable, depressed, felt undeserving of anything in life I was just low. I looked around at the friends I had around me and some of my coworkers and said this CANNOT BE LIFE!!! It seemed like nobody around me wanted more or felt like they can get out of their situation I asked about 3 people what are their plans for their lives and no one could tell me a thing but “I’m just going with the flow” and that was my last straw and I knew I had to make something shake! This was around 2020 I took a whole week to strategize and plan what it was that I really wanted to do with my life I knew school was not an option I attended Broward Community College for Two days and I just knew college was not in my future. After me praying and brainstorming me and and a old friend of mine decided to start a side hustle selling lashes I honestly was not looking to go far with it this was just something to do while I continue to figure out what it is I actually wanted to do. As time went by I realized that I was the only one interested and putting in the work to making this “Side hustle” successful I was up nights planning strategizing creating doing research while still trying to figure out what exactly I wanted to do with my life. You may say well Serena it sounds like you was really invested in your little “side hustle” a little to much for it to be something you didn’t really do i ended fell In love with wanting to be a entrepreneur. I loved packing orders and talking to clients and just making ladies feel beautiful with my products. You may ask well what happened to the friend, we both decided that it was more of my vision then hers and we went our separate ways concerning business. I was super excited to start this new journey but didn’t have a name. One morning I sat on my bed for 4 hours before work and came up with the name BEAUTYSHAÈ I wanted the name to have the word beauty it a lot of people ask me where did I get Shaè from because my name is Serena I tell them God gave me that name God literally helped me created my whole business identity.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Taking accountability as a business owner knowing my wrongs and taking into consideration the constructive criticism that my clients tell me so that I can give them a better experience every time they come to me and for future clients that want to come to me. As a business owner I take the time to explain the process to my clients and I also take my time with my craft I offer many sales.

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
To keep in touch with my clients I send a follow up text asking how their experience was with me when they came to their appointments i also have loyalty cards for my clients every time you book an appointment I stamp your card and after a certain amount of stamps you get a free lash set Top and Bottoms that keeps my clients coming back every time !
