Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Serafim Mazurs. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Serafim thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I personally believe that networking is essential for success in the creative industry. It allows you to build relationships with other professionals in the field, get advice and feedback, and to make connections that can lead to new opportunities. Most shoots I have booked stemmed from me reaching out to individuals, or people reaching out to me due to word of mouth. A good photographer is also a good marketer, which is why networking and marketing yourself is so important in this career. Sometimes just scrolling on Instagram for a few minutes may lead you a new opportunity that may have not been there for you if you weren’t looking.
Serafim, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
To begin my quick life recap, let’s go back about a decade. I was raised as an only child and traveled the world with my parents, which ultimately inspired me to become a photographer. After completing high school, I enrolled into online university. Due to online based learning, I began my career early as a photographer and started working paid gigs at the age of 16. Growing up near Detroit and utilizing social media as a form of networking with local creatives, It wasn’t long before I began getting recognized for my work.
Beginning of 2021, I was contracted by a private event agency as a Creative Director. During my contracted work, I traveled to Tulum, Mexico; where I and my team lived at for one month, creating content for influencers, models, and brands.
Moving forward into 2022, I pivoted and officially established myself as an editorial photographer, focusing on magazine, high fashion, and event photography. My work has been published in renowned publications such as Goji, Vigour, and Photohouse magazine. Towards the end of 2022, I began working closely with music artists and record labels, and was given the opportunity to photograph artists such as Channel Tres, Duckwrth, Yung Bae, and Sofi Tukker.
I am proud of how far I have came, and am excited to continue meeting new people, traveling to new places, and creating content.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Not to sound cliché, but the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to create something unique that brings a smile to someones face. While shooting, I often give my clients a sneak peek of what we have shot on my camera, and the excited reaction helps me verify that what I am doing is working, and excites the client to receive their final edits after the shoot. Seeing the impact of your work and the positive reactions it elicits can be incredibly satisfying. The dopamine rush of a simple instagram story share, comment, or DM is something we all look forward too when sharing our work on social media.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Non-creatives may find it difficult to understand the emotional investment that goes into creating art. Creative work often requires a great deal of personal reflection and experimentation, which can be difficult to explain to someone who doesn’t have the same level of passion and motivation. Furthermore, the creative process often involves trial and error, and that one perfect picture I post on my Instagram is often one of hundreds that I took. That being said, I personally struggle with sharing my work, and have withheld dozens of photoshoots and projects due to my perception of what is perfect. Sharing this with people has helped me gain a different perspective, as everyone tells me they like a different photo from a different photoshoot of mine. Art is subjective, and what you may think is completely different from the people around you.
