We recently connected with Sequel Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Sequel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Any thoughts around creating more inclusive workplaces?
Creating a more inclusive workplace isn’t as difficult as some people make it seem. Companies have more access to a diverse pool of talent than ever before, but most refuse to be more inclusive because they genuinely don’t understand or see the benefits of it. They see inclusivity as a “favor” rather than building a stronger company.
Quick story – I’m 6’5″ and I used to absolutely love taking baths. At around 10th grade when I shot up to 6’2″ I began to realize that baths were quickly becoming a thing that I couldn’t enjoy anymore, because I simply couldn’t fit into tubs comfortably. If there were more tall people working at bath tub companies, this problem wouldn’t exist. The tall people would’ve made sure that bath tubs came in bigger sizes and in turn created more profits because you’re selling more tubs that everyone can use and champion.
Anyway, that’s a dumb example and obviously there’s more harmful ways that being a non-inclusive company can harm your business and hurt profits. I would argue that there isn’t one workplace that should just have one type of person. There’s too many blind spots.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My government name is Jimmy Smith II, my parents didn’t want to nickname me “junior” so they’ve been calling me Sequel every since. I’ve made my mark in a bunch of different creative disciplines but I currently put in a lot of work in the social and entertainment space as a writer. I’ve been in the creative industry for 12 years or so, but even longer if you count the years of watching my Dad (Jimmy Smith) and studying his advertising work as a kid.
Throughout my journey, I’ve worked with renowned brands like NFL, 7-ELEVEn, JBL and more. Notably, I co-wrote and co-directed the award-winning documentary film “Heaven Sent The Documentary,” which earned a London International Award. Beyond traditional brands, I’ve made contributions in the social media landscape, creating content for celebrities like Will Smith, Jada Pickett Smith, and Snoop Dogg. My unwavering passion for storytelling and entertainment keeps me curious and ambitious, and I hope to continue to captivate and engage audiences across diverse platforms for years to come.

Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
They’re cool and misunderstood. I own a few but I’m definitely not counting on them to change my life financially.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I knew about luck earlier in my creative journey. Understanding the concept of luck and YOUR timing will save you a lot of stress.
