We were lucky to catch up with Senam Palmer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Senam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Cliche but yet hard to commit to, ALWAYS take it slow. It will help you so much, speed is a byproduct of accuracy. I still need to invest in this discipline cause it helps control my rhythm/lead playing a lot. I really adore players that can do things like subdivide and not just on drums. Patience pays off and figuring out formulas will help give you roadblocks to knowing YOU want to sound. Anything can distract (thats life) you from your goal, so just stay regimented to what you are trying to achieve and you’ll see what you are working towards come to fruition
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
hey hi! my name is Se’nam (sounded out like venom) Palmer, I’m from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. I started playing guitar around 11 years old and sorta had an off an on relationship with it but eventually I gave into it. What got me in was my interest into guitar culture, the sounds and visuals that music can accumulate were just so fascinating to me. That also influenced my affinity into how deep I got into guitar playing, especially when we talk about technique. I’m in an Atlanta based band called Crispin Wah, our music is instrumental but we call it Shredgaze. but I also work with other artist for session based work and additional projects. SO if YOU need any werido guitar sounds or some guitar shred then absolutely hit my line cause id love to work with as many people as possible
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
hmnnnn I would say challenge their biases would be something that would help proliferate art instead of it being suppressed and undermined or misunderstood. Providing proper spaces and maybe some funding would help a lot for DIY spaces
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
hmnnnnnnn sounds nepotistic but i just wish i knew a lot more people to help me get to where or what i wanted to do but im happy more than thankful enough to know the people i know that have gotten me where im at
