We recently connected with Selia Fox and have shared our conversation below.
Selia, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I have always wanted to be a writer. As a child, I was obsessed with journals and diaries. I created music lyrics when I was a teenager and young adult. I often wondered what my author name would look like on the cover of a book I’d written. It wasn’t until my longtime friend Classie Fryer passed in a hit-and-run accident in 2015 that, served as inspiration for my first self-published book. A collection of poems titled, “Burn Emotion on Fire.” The book is so raw with emotion, and tells my deepest thoughts about real situations I’ve encountered. At the time, I did not know what to write down as my name when it came to imprinting. I searched for other authors for inspiration and felt I was not prepared to publicly identify myself, so instead I created a pen name, “Lia Lux.” Not knowing the outcome of public scrutiny at the time I felt that was the best option. In retrospect I think that I was hiding behind that pen name. However, I felt differently after I spoke to my husband about it. Classie gave me the courage to write the poetry book and it made me re-evaluate my name as an author. In 2017, when I self-published that book, I made sure to dedicate my book to her and later changed my author name to my real name, Selia Fox.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, of course my name is Selia Fox, and currently, I am a self-published author, I have done several businesses through the years but, writing by far is the most fulfilling for me. Writing challenges me, it’s never boring and it’s everchanging. I self-publish blank journals, prompt journals, poetry books, and I am starting a novel, which will be released soon. I have also been in the lab creating card games and a subscription box with other business owner. I am so excited about the new things in the future and when I comes to being an author you can do so many things. I believe that what distinguishes me from others is simply self-awareness. My clients come in all backgrounds and cultures so I make books that are diverse. I also draw from my own experiences and listen to the people. I write for individuals who seek solutions to challenges in life. I try to make them look at things differently, through self-expression and self-discovery. I want my potential clients to know there is a journal out there with their name on it. Wherever you are on your journey you can always find motivation and reassurance in your own words, thoughts, and feelings. I don’t think I am proud on one particular thing, just being able to help someone makes me feel amazing.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is that others can take from it what you didn’t even expect them to. When I made my manifest journal, ‘And So It Begins,” I created it for myself. The pandemic was taking a toll on my mental health, and I just wanted something to help me develop a more positive mindset. I sat down, and after a couple of hours, it was done. Looking over the journal, I thought to myself, “this could help other people”. So, I decided to self-publish my first journal. So many people have loved that journal, and I am so happy to help someone in their journey.
A good friend of mine Aletra Hunter sponsored “And So It Begins”, I just want to tell her thank you for believing in me!
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
There have been so many events that have had an impact on me. The lesson of self-discovery is one I have carried with me since I was a little girl. It started with my grandmother’s acquaintance, he was a business owner in our neighborhood, and I was an impressionable adolescent who assumed they knew everything. My grandmother and I would argue because I wanted to go out and do things with my friends but I lived in a stricked household. My grandmother was talking to the man about me doing more beneficial things with my time. He told me to keep a record of everything I felt and thought by writing it down in a journal, no matter what or how long it took. Then go back and re-read it after a few months to learn from it. At first I thought it was bull, but I did like to write, so I followed his instructions and was literally speechless! I learned so much about myself; it was amazing. We change so much and don’t realize that sometimes all the answers that we need are inside us.
I found inspiration in so many different things on my journey, I want to say thank you to everyone who help me in anyway. Especially to my husband for long talks of motivation that he gives me. Sir Mario, you have no idea how much you inspire me Thank you!
