We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Selena Sikalis . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Selena below.
Hi Selena, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
It started out with me making meal prep for myself and my mom asking me to make meals for her to take into work with her. Her coworkers saw the food she had every day and asked where she got it from. They then proceeded to tell my mom that they would pay me to make meals for them and the idea continued from there.
Selena, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My mom and I started meal prepping for ourselves years ago because we were both busy working full time and doing our masters. We both fell in love with the aspect of meal prep and saw how much it changed our lives and wanted to be able to help others who also have busy lives.
During my senior year of high school I started my fitness journey where I fell in love with the fitness world. Eating right was one of my hardest challenges when I started exercising and trying to lose weight. I would go online to social media and see all the boring repetitive chicken, rice and broccoli and I knew that wasn’t sustainable for me. that is when I learned about how fun meal prep can actually be with the right recipes and ingredients. I went on to graduate from High Point University with an exercise science degree. I am a certified Personal Trainer and a Certified Nutrition Coach. I am also currently working on my MBA. Meal prep has allowed me to change my lifestyle and all I hope is that i’m able to do the same for others.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Before going into college I was always convinced I would be premed and go on to be a doctor or something related. When I started getting into fitness my senior year I realized the passion I had in the industry and changed my major to exercise science and dove into this industry. It was scary at first because I had always only had 1 plan of what I was going to do with my future but I am so happy I found what I was passionate in.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Starting a business at 22 is not an easy task especially if you need funding for the business. I was getting no after no on funding and it was really hard. That didn’t make me stop though. I kept going through different organizations and options until I finally found one that worked for me.
