We were lucky to catch up with Selena Kirksey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Selena , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
As the founder of Boobies on Duty, I am often asked about the story behind the mission. For me, it all started when I was a young mother trying to navigate the world of entrepreneurship. I quickly realized that as a woman of color, there were unique challenges that I faced that my white male counterparts did not.
I struggled to find resources and support that were tailored to my needs as a woman entrepreneur. There were few role models that looked like me or understood the struggles I was facing. It was a lonely and frustrating journey, and I knew that I was not alone in my experiences.
It was during this time that the idea for Boobies on Duty was born. I wanted to create a platform that would provide women entrepreneurs, especially women of color, with the resources, support, and community they need to succeed.
Through our blog, product offerings, and coaching services, we aim to provide women with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the challenging terrain of entrepreneurship. Our mission is to empower women to take control of their businesses, their finances, and their lives.
It has been a long and challenging road, but seeing the impact that Boobies on Duty has had on women entrepreneurs has made it all worth it. We have helped countless women turn their dreams into reality, and I am excited to see what the future holds for our community of #melaninmama entrepreneurs.
Selena , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi there, I’m Selena Kirksey, and I’m an entrepreneur and blogger. I have three kids and started Boobies on Duty as a way to share my journey and provide resources for other women in similar situations.
My journey to entrepreneurship started after my health took a turn and I had to reevaluate my career path. I wanted to create something that allowed me to prioritize my health and my family while also providing value to others. That’s when I started my blog, Boobies on Duty.
As a single mother, I faced a unique set of challenges when it came to finding my path as an entrepreneur. But I was determined to make it work, and I focused on providing helpful tips and insights for other women in similar situations.
What sets Boobies on Duty apart is our focus on providing support and resources for women entrepreneurs, especially those with children and those facing health challenges. I’m most proud of the community we’ve built and the impact we’ve had on the lives of other women.
If you’re looking for a supportive community of women entrepreneurs, or if you’re facing challenges as a mother and entrepreneur, I invite you to join us at Boobies on Duty.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
As the founder of Boobies on Duty, I believe that my reputation within the market was built on my dedication and passion for empowering women entrepreneurs, particularly those who are women of color. Through my personal experiences as a single mother of three and navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship after my health changed, I was able to connect with others who were going through similar struggles. By sharing my story, providing valuable resources and advice through the blog, and offering coaching services, I was able to establish myself as a trusted voice in the community. Additionally, my focus on promoting women’s empowerment and diversity within entrepreneurship has resonated with many, helping to solidify my reputation as a leader in this space.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Sure, there was a time when I had to pivot in my career. After I had started my blog, Boobies on Duty, I realized that I wanted to do more than just share information and resources for women entrepreneurs. I wanted to provide personalized coaching and support to help them succeed. This meant pivoting from a blog-based business to a coaching and consulting business.
It was a scary decision to make because I was already a single mother of three and had limited resources. But I knew that if I wanted to create the impact I envisioned, I had to take that leap of faith. I started by reaching out to women in my network and offering my services at a discounted rate to build my client base.
It wasn’t easy, but with persistence and hard work, I was able to build a successful coaching business. Pivoting allowed me to stay true to my mission of empowering women entrepreneurs, while also fulfilling my desire to provide personalized support. I learned that being open to change and willing to take risks can lead to incredible opportunities for growth and success.
