We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Selena Erwin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Selena, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
Short answer, YES! Long answer: I wish I would have taken it seriously sooner. I started creating content back in 2019-2020 when I was about to start my first round of IVF with my first daughter Italy and also around that time me and my husband had a couple’s channel on YouTube. I was working in corporate, unable to climb the ladder no matter how many times I tried and I ultimately was just not happy with my living situation, it was at the point where we were financially struggling and also just not settling with where we were in life. We wanted to break generational curses and give our kids so much more than we ever had. If I would have stayed consistent I probably would have the life I’ve always dreamed of by now, but being young and lacking the discipline played a big part in why I was never consistent. I feel like I started at a great time because there were not AS MANY creators as there are now trying to make a name for themselves. I definitely feel like everything is working out how it’s supposed to though now looking back at how irresponsible I used to be I probably would have mishandled my blessing. Now I’m learning how to edit better, I have a great community of women, and I am really disciplined on staying consistent and focused.
Selena, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Im Selena, I am a mother and lifestyle content creator from Chicago who has been making content (on a serious level) for about a year and a half now. I create relatable and engaging content having to do with all things, motherhood, infertility, faith, wellness, lifestyle, marriage, humor and a little sprinkle of brand deals here and there. What sets me apart is I’m not just creating content to follow a trend or as a hobby. I’m doing this to change my family’s life, I’m doing this because when I wake up in the morning and turn that camera on it feels like fun rather than work, I’m doing this to show my kids that dreams really do come true. I don’t have a back up plan, or a village to fall back on. Me and my mom don’t have a relationship and never really have and I don’t know my dad, it’s just me and my husband figuring it out. I’m most proud of my growth over the last year I’ve really locked in and focused on bettering my craft and it’s really starting to show in my videos. Please don’t look at my old videos you’ve been warned LOL
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think people who don’t create content but consume it often find content creators cringe or not a real job. Well let me tell you instead of working 9-5 you’re working 9-9 or even later, the grind does not stop there is literally always something to do. You’re the boss, the marketing team. The editor, The script writer, and the filmmaker. I think if people realized a 30 second video doesn’t actually take 30 seconds to make they’d appreciate it much more.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a content creator is the freedom and endless possibilities to grow in the industry. It only takes one video and your life can be changed in an instant. That’s so exciting to look forward too every day.
