We were lucky to catch up with Selena + Erin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Selena + Erin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Our mission is to design spaces that inspire people live their most fulfilled lives. Both of us (Selena + Erin) have felt the impact of what a beautiful space does for us personally. We both feel more creative and happy when the space around us is not only beautifully put together, but also resonates with us personally. What looks beautiful to one person may not to another. We really feel that the space around you directly impacts your mood, feelings, how you interact with others and be with yourself: in short, it impacts your life. This is such a huge potential to curate how you feel daily! It’s our job to help our clients realize those desired feelings by designing deeply personal spaces that will foster their wellbeing and help them live their best lives!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are Selena + Erin, each a mom to two boys, each a San Diego transplant, and lovers or anything and everything creative! We met a few years ago at a networking event for female entrepreneurs and we clicked immediately. Selena had a history in fashion design and had dabbled in home design. Erin had a history as a realtor and also had dabbled in home design for her clients when they wanted their newly purchased house to feel more like a home. A week after we met, we decided to start an interior design business together and here we are, a few years later and loving it! We decided to put all of our experience together and can now offer clients what we lovingly refer to as “The Whole Enchilada.” We help our clients find their dream home, but a lot of the time it doesn’t look like a dream right from the start. That’s where we take it to the next level. We help our clients see the potential in these houses (and often times they end up purchasing a home for less since it isn’t “move-in ready”), and then we work with them to turn it into their dream home. We tackle everything from minor upgrades like paint, floors, or swapping out finishes, to space planning and helping purchase furniture for the new house, to full scale renovations of the entire home. And while we love doing a whole house renovation for clients, we of course offer all of our design services to anyone not purchasing a new house as well, and that’s a large part of our business. Since we’ve started our business has grown completely by word of mouth, and we have the best clients because of it! It’s like a network of awesome people who all want the same thing, a beautiful space to call home.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Our business has thrived on word of mouth, but in order for that to be a good strategy for you, they have to good words coming out of those mouths! We always strive for the best customer relations, and it is something we decided right from the start. Our goal is to truly hear and listen to our clients, to deep dive into their why behind their project, and to learn about their lives. We end up having close relationships with many of our clients because we learn so much about them and we grow close during the design process. This also helps us to deliver a design for them that is really meaningful for them and they are over the moon happy about. And this leads to great word of mouth. We never ask our clients to talk about us, but after such a positive experience, we aren’t surprised that they do!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Our business was just about a year old at the beginning of COVID and we both thought that it was the end of FLEURISH. We quickly put together an e-design option that would allow us to do small designs remotely, with out clients doing a lot of the work like taking measurements, receiving shipments, taking care of returns when necessary, and a lot of the other aspects we normally take care of. We had a few e-design projects, but as we kept talking with potential clients, we found that most of them just wanted full service design, and we stayed creative with how to keep that safe. We did as much as we could remotely, changed meetings that we normally did in person to zoom, but then were still able to take on some of the other responsibilities we normally did pre-covid like taking care of all the shipments and returns, that way we could still do an install and reveal day.
