Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sejal ($EJ) Kargal. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sejal ($EJ), thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken is being vulnerable with my self-discovery and identity through my music. Being raised to view creative passions as only hobbies, following my passion was a significant leap.
Managing everything independently, from production to promotion, is challenging but enriching. It was always a risk that I wouldn’t be taken seriously as I was only able to begin releasing music last year and what I make doesn’t fit into any other box or genre, but I believe in leaving a legacy of unique art and storytelling. Making music and sharing my soul with the world makes my life worth living, creating something meaningful that resonates and leaves a lasting impact.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a South Asian-American artist blending my identity with modern music genres, creating unique fusion tracks that resonate on multiple levels. My journey into music began early with violin lessons, leading to a deep love for Carnatic vocal techniques I learned from a guru in India.
My work spans various genres, from indie rock to hyperpop, with songs that explore themes of identity, mental health, and self-discovery.
My ultimate goal is to leave a legacy of unique art and storytelling that inspires others to embrace their identities and passions. My journey is fueled by love for music and a desire to make a meaningful impact through my art.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
As a first-generation South Asian-American artist figuring it all out on my own, I’ve faced numerous barriers that others with resources and industry connections might not even realize exist. Competing with established names and privileged individuals can feel overwhelming when algorithms and industry biases favor those already in the spotlight.
The challenges go beyond just creating art; it’s about consistently fighting for visibility and opportunities in an industry that often overlooks diverse voices. Many people don’t see the countless hours of work, self-teaching, learning, self-financing, and the emotional toll it takes to put yourself out there, especially when your background and identity aren’t widely represented.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to share my authentic self and connect with others on a deeply personal level. Creating music allows me to express my emotions, struggles, and experiences in a way that resonates with listeners.
Each song, performance, and collaboration teaches me something new about myself and my craft. Knowing that I’m leaving a lasting legacy through my music, one that reflects my unique identity and experiences, makes all the challenges worthwhile.
