We were lucky to catch up with Seiko Hashimoto recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Seiko thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
My answer could be long for this question because I have to explain how I got here and transferred my career.
Turn around to say that I have a very lucky life that has been. Because here I am a creator of jewelry now and I have been a professional dancer since 18 years old until I retired at the age of 47.
I grew up in a very unique, creative family (chef, potter, tailor, and painter) so being in the creative world is my nature.
I played with my mom’s sewing materials (fabrics, buttons, etc…) all the time and my parents taught me to cook and my father taught me DIY with my younger brother. And they always told me “You are so good at doing that”.
I started taking ballet classes when I was three years old, by my doctors suggested the cause of my asthma. The decision was made by my mom and she told me later she thought I gonna be loved dance and good.
Later I started making jewelry as a hobby during my pregnancy and had a chance to make my dance Co-worker’s jewelry for her wedding. She had seen the creations I was wearing myself and asked me to do the custom-made for her. And later she said, “You should start your own business”. I never thought that I was that good at making jewelry but many people said the same to me so I could realize and believe in myself I may do that to live when I retire from the dance.
I have already been loved and passionate about pursuing how to be the best since I was younger. I learned not to give up, and to be patient and confident and I couldn’t know and see myself in a positive without someone’s eyes and opinions as guidance.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The main creations are all my original designs but I do Re-design and make changes as my customers request to create only one for you such as changing colors, materials, findings, sizes, etc…
I love and am passionate about making pieces that my client desires to have!

Have you ever had to pivot?

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Through my experiences as a creative and part non-creative (many dancers have to have a part-time job for a living for some point…) being “not just a self” is rational and could be motivating, gathering the energy and building with others to move toward the goal. And I think being a company dancer isn’t so different. But I think the bigger picture and imagination for your desire is necessary and what to benefit to the others to become an individual creative.
