We were lucky to catch up with Secret Sister recently and have shared our conversation below.
Secret, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The whole deal is about making music fun and inspired. Every decision is based around inspiring the artist and helping them progress quickly in their journey. That includes having interesting microphones to sing into, curating the plan of the day to be unique and fun, using analog equipment like tape machines / typewriters, and more. We aim for every artist / band to leave feeling creatively energized and inspired and proud of their ability to tap into their most authentic self. We also intentionally try to make sure we’re not chasing the industry norms and copying other successful acts, we always try to find a way to make a new and valuable artistic contributions.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We’re doing this because there seems to be a huge need for studios that focus on the artist experience and development, in an art-centric / not commercial way. I grew up in LA and have watched countless artists come here and get engulfed in the desire to create a career and become famous, and totally murder their artistic and creative spark along the way. The same spark that was ironically was the initiation of their endeavor. I’ve been there in my life too, and it’s the worst. I want Secret Sister to be a place where people reconnect with their most authentic self and find deep inspiration that may have been lost or beaten out of them.
Basically artistic inspiration > everything else.
For us that looks like a lot of retro motown-inspired gear, an open floor plan with no control room, a focus on live “on the floor” (live, everyone playing together) recordings, and mics/instruments that beg to be picked up.
We’ll of course have regular production sessions, but some other things to look forward to are
Jam Nights
Anti-digital Straight-to-cassette showcases
Nashville-Style Writers Rounds
Intimate candle lit shows
And much more!
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
Secret Sister studio is actually a stepping stone towards a much bigger agender to step into the NFT space.
NFT’s utilize technology that will inevitably shake up the industry, and we’re excited to use them and grow in the space by doing some creative things
We have a massive idea that integrates the technology, and the the 1/1 nature of cassette tapes are going to be the perfect testing ground for the plan. I can’t say much more for now… but keep an eye out for resources on understanding the technology and buying some cool exclusive music!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The number one goal is inspiring artists, but the journey is also pushing me as an artist, producer, writer, instrumentalist, and mix engineer.
Music has always been the most tantalizing art form and I’ve spent my life pursuing it. I’m really excited to have an endeavor where I can spend that energy in a way that benefits more people than just myself.
I really hope the community we build helps get other producers and artists to meet and work together. I also want to create jobs within the studio to get other talented producers, videographers, event planners, etc, fun and good paying work. If we win everyone wins 🫶🏻
