Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sebastian Mazur-Cohen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Sebastian thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
I began my drag career by incorperating my background with dance. It all started in 2009 when RuPauls Drag Race first started. I was working at Tracks Night Club when I was introduced by the team to Nina Flowers. They were explaining to me how this new Rupaul show is coming out and that they wanted Nina to start a monthly produced drag show. They knew I choregraphed and had my own dance crew so they thought it could be a mutual relationship where we both bennifit. I performed with my crew for the very first show. Nothing like this event was anything I danced before. Crowd was wild. Very in your face show. It was so awesome. This was also my first experience with being around Drag Entertainers of that caliber. Next month show comes around and Nina Flowers books us again except this time she gave me a challenge of what song and she wanted me to lip sync. The song was by Lords of Acid – Space Slut. I never listened to music like that at the time and I was so taken back but came up with a whole cool vampire idea. Number went great. A few weeks pass by, and I didnt hear from Nina. I texted her to ask whats the plan for the next one. She mentioned she no longer wanted the crew and proceeded to tell me I have a gift and should be doing DRAAAAAG. From there everything took off with Drag. I was in the monthly shows and although I was newer to the scene and explained to Nina I need make up lessons she told me I can learn that but what I bring to stage and the vision I had that not a lot of people could do. I ended up using my entire career to marry Drag and Dance. I realized that there is a missing link in both worlds and to bridge them. I have gone on to sucessfully be on tv shows (one in developement right now.), perform and work with all kinds of amazing talents and celebrities, music videos, concerts, and choregraph for events and entertainers all because A) Drag grabs peoples attention and use that art to make connections and B) once I had their attention I applified my talents with it which then put me in pepoples front view. Who else better to choregraph than someone who knows what its like to be the center of the number? All through this Drag has as well helped me to become a better performer. When I was in LA doing the dancer/choregrapher starving artisit dream, I was able to assist the great Sheryl Murakami (Beyonce Sasha Fierce Videos and Tours) because she saw that spark in my performance that Drag helped me curate. Having two worlds come together to push and network for the work I wanted to do has been one of the best choices I have ever made.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Sebastian Mazur-Cohen 33 years young with pro-nouns He/Him but as my alter ego I am known as Minor Misdemeanor pro-nouns She/Her. Proud and first born to the haus of Misdemeanor who is run by Felony Misdemeanor (drag mom).
I am first generation american born to Polish imigrant family. Money was always hard in our family and because of that I never was able to go to studios or dance classes. I always had a passion for dance and just anything artistically creative. I remember and still to this day if I want to create something its like a burst of images flowing through my mind and all I want to do is make it come to life. Mom saw I had a gift with dance and tried her best to nurture it to best degree she could. Eventually I became a teen and late in life I began dancing professionally in a studio where my scholorship was to clean the studio afterwards. Althought I was 17/18 starting late I was so excited to get to learn and expand my creative side.
At the age of 18 I discovered drag as well and exploring the LGBTQ+ community and culture. My drag mom Felony Misdemeanor taught me everything I know and guided me through this crazy life. To have someone in your corner no matter what and helping you along the way witht heir expertise and knowledge is so valuble. Always listen when someone who has that kind of power in knowledge because it can save you so much heartache and time. They only want to help you not make the same mistakes as them. They WANT to see you SUCCEED. Find those type of people (ride or dies) and cherish them. 15+ years in the game with my best friend and we are here as one of the pillar families in this community (and Denver has some strong Drag hauses!) Love you Fel and the Haus of Misdemeanors!
Working hard on my training and putting myself out there in both dance and drag I eventually made some great connections as well as some highlights of my career. I was able to work with almost every single RuPuals Drag Race contestants, I was one of the founding people in creating one of Denvers largest drag shows known as Drag Nation alongside not only my Misdemeanor Crew but Denver Dance headed by Marguerite Endsley as well as Erik Arrendondo, choregraphed for it as well, I was top 7 boys on So You Think You Can Dance – Poland, my crew and I were on Floored tv competition, On the show Genration Drag as a mentor, I had the privallage to be on Americas Got Talent with my drag sisters, assistant choregrapher to many projects and choregraphers my time in LA, and currently runnining all over town with the Haus of Misdemeanors doing not only bar shows but, weddings, bachlorette parties, divorce parties, circuit parties, teahcing heels classes and dance classes, my buisness partner Kendra D and I created a unique experience with Jad’s open smoke consumption bar with a Weed Bingo called Blaze N Bingo. Pretty soon all the networking and hard work put in will be paying off soon. Cant say more until further notice :-)
I go to colleges to speak on panels and perform for all benifits. Not only is being an entertainer in this community fun but it comes with great responsability. Any of us who have a platofrm we try to give back by performing in benfits, polticial shows, we march and bang on our drums to be heard on whats happening in our community. We are here to uplift each other and take care of our community. Anywhere and anything to make ourselves visable and heard.
Whatever you need, let me help you make it come true.

Remeber: being kind never hurt anyone but also know your worth.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I had to to piviot my whole career when we couldnt afford to live in LA anymore. The constant hustle and being broke was too hard and realized I didnt have all the resources I needed out there to be sucessful. After realizing that I can still audition and be creative from anywhere I decided to take the plunge and move back to my hometown. I felt like a failure because there was so much more I wanted to acchomplish. But it didnt stop me. Looking back it was the best desicion I have ever made. Dont let change be something to be scared of. If its somehting that your passionate about and want to make a career out of it then there is always a way. Living in the modern tech world, embrace the fact that you can do anything from anywhere. You just have to figure out what that path is and take thoes steps. Dont compramise on any of it. Hard and discourgaing at times but believe in the process. Proud of what I was able to build here in Denver and only successful because of the people and family supporting me behind it. Lean on each other for support and help. Because when one of us succeeds, all of us succed.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I feel like what most people wont know is everyone has a different creative process. You cant force it. For me for example with dance choregraphy or choregraphy movement for videos. If the right energy and clear mindset isnt in place, it will take me twice as long to come up with something and not even be happy with it in the end. Its like a writers block. But if I’am inspired or the mood is right, everything is free flowing naturally to me. Its almost exhilirating and I get so excited and get lost in all the thoughts and ideas and run with whatever is the clearer vision and feels right. I love storyboarding things out so that way its infront of me and then able to explain visions to others clearer. I love to come up with the styling, the looks, what is the intention behind everything. Once that is figured out then its like great I have my story now lets fill it in. Having those blocks setup ahead is so helpful. Moral of the story is you cant force it. Let it take you on a journey for the best authentic outcome. When its forced its never right,
