We recently connected with Sebastian Konnackel and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sebastian thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew that I wanted to pursue an artistic path professionally was during my second year of college while I was getting my Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication. That was the year when I began to take a lot of risks in the hope that they pay off. Despite not having ever owned a drum kit, I went out of my way and connected with a bunch of other musicians in Bangalore, started jamming with them at rehearsal spaces and eventually started playing shows and competitions. That’s when I realized that drumming made me happier than anything else in my life. Playing these shows also exposed me to the audio engineering side which piqued my interest as well. All of these realizations led me to begin planning to convert drumming and audio engineering from a passion into a profession.

Sebastian, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Compared to my peers, I got into the industry pretty late. I began playing shows and competitions when I was 19. I slowly worked my way up to getting paid gigs back home in India. Then, once I completed my Bachelor’s in Electronics, I decided to take a leap of faith and moved to the United States to pursue a Certificate degree in Audio Engineering from Musician’s Institute, Los Angeles. Being exposed to the immense talent in this city is what solidified my decision to pursue music professionally for me. Musician’s Institute helped me get access to the tools and networking that I needed to begin getting established in the music scene in Los Angeles.
As a drummer, I play for various artists. In addition to playing live, I also offer drum writing services for artists who want a drummer’s perspective for writing parts for their music. I specialize in genres like Alternative Rock, Post Hardcore and Progressive Metal but I have also written with and played for artists of a variety of genres such as Blues, RnB and Reggae.
I am especially proud of the work I’ve done with Kitsune/Kala, Kazuki Tokaji and David Orien. They are hands down the most fun and creative artists that I’ve worked with so far.
As an audio engineer, I offer recording and mixing services. I have also worked live sound for various events, working extensively with companies like Tim Pinch Productions. I have also worked as a Foley Artist and Audio Editor for Post Production projects.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Throughout my journey so far, the one thing I’ve noticed that many people fail to understand about the creative field is the amount of resilience you need to have. Things may not pan out the way you expected, plans may take way longer to materialize than you expected, people who you thought were friends may turn their back on you. As a creative in today’s music industry there’s always going to a lot of roadblocks on your way. The key is to keep getting back up no matter what happens. It’s always okay to take a break after bad experience but you have to be able to motivate yourself to get back up and continue the journey no matter what.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect is someone tells me that I’ve inspired them to work harder at their craft or to pursue a path that they had perceived to be too risky for them in the past. It always makes me happy knowing that the work I put in might the reason for inspiring someone to work harder at their dream.
