We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sebastian Hernandez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sebastian below.
Sebastian, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
In the acting industry many view success as arbitrary or even getting lucky. While it can be said that a lot of it is luck, I believe in the idea of working hard at what you’re passionate about to best align yourself with the opportunity when it comes around. You may get an opportunity early on in your career and completely blow it if you aren’t ready. Which is why I see importance in learning as much as I can to best prepare myself and to grow in my craft while having fun along the way.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I had always thought about acting but never viewed it as attainable. Growing up I was told to take the traditional route of going to college and getting that degree to land that perfect job. That never resonated with me but I felt lost in what I wanted to do with my future so I just went with it. I started my journey as an actor fairly recently in December of 2019. I was doing stand-up comedy at the time and I came across a guy who said he was an actor. We went to the same university and he recommended I audition for this student film that he had seen on a Facebook casting page. I auditioned and ended up getting the role. Sadly, the film was never finished but I gained valuable experience working on a set and fell in love with it.
I was itching for more so I continued to audition for student films on multiple casting pages and landed a couple here and there. Then COVID hit and I was stuck back at my moms house away from all the student films in Orlando. However, this led me to pursue more projects in Tampa and I ended up working on a web series throughout the summer of 2020. Through this web series I was put into contact with my current acting coach and made many connections in the local network. I had never taken acting classes before so it was like peeling back a whole new layer I had no idea about. This added fuel to the fire. I continued to join more casting pages online and self submit to more and more projects. Eventually, the projects I started finding and submitting to became more ambitious. I started landing small commercial roles and working on bigger indie projects.
I’m no where near where I want to be and can only imagine what the future holds but I’m going to give it my all. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve gotten thus far and for the amazing people I have gotten to meet in this field. I have a long way to go in my journey and am looking forward to every moment of it. The highs and lows along with the experiences I will gain on the way.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I’d have to say it’s the opportunity to meet and work with so many talented individuals. Each new project is a fresh slate of new people from all walks of life and it’s fascinating to get to know them. You become a family on set with the long hours and when that final product is being presented there’s no better feeling than watching it with those who worked so hard to create it.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Actors need to be ready for rejection. It’s part of the job. This isn’t much of a story but I’ve built a habit of self submitting to multiple projects a day and knowing that I MIGHT hear back from 1 or 2 or not even hear back at all. I’ve learned to not be phased by this and to just move on to the next because that job just wasn’t meant for me. But maybe the next one will be.
