We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sean Woods. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sean below.
Sean, appreciate you joining us today. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
I believe one thing that many, but not all disagree with is putting in the work!
Over the years, many have forgotten that putting in the work overtime will eventually bring results.
There’s nothing wrong with a shortcut here and there, but these days, most are always looking for the shortest run to the finish line.
When things don’t come fast or easy, they’ll usually get discouraged very easily or say that it didn’t work for them. When truthfully, it didn’t work because they didn’t work.
Everyone’s story and route will be different, but the one thing that never fails is putting in the work!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a cinematographer, educator and overall media specialist.
My original background was in radio and audio, as I was an on-air radio personality and DJ.
Before that time passed, I had already started picking up a camera, designing flyers, sites and filming and editing short videos. At the time, it wasn’t on my mind that it could be the main thing that I do. It was an addition to what I was doing in the music space.
Over the years, I began to get more into the craft, studying as much as possible, practicing daily…then before I realized it, I actually had clients on a regular. But, it was far from an overnight thing. Countless days of studying and practicing, running into walls, hearing no regularly. I just didn’t stop.
If I had to speak on discipline, I’d say that making sure things get done is something I take pride in. It really takes a lot of dedication, not just to yourself, but your clients, in order to follow-through with things. There will be days you don’t feel like working or talking to clients or studying. But, if the bigger picture is growth, then you find a way. And even though I’ve learned to adapt, I’d also like to mention that it wasn’t an overnight thing either. You develop habit overtime…the ones that you put more time towards, those are the ones that blossom. For me, getting a new client feels great, but delivering a product that they love is priceless.
As far as services, I’m filming a lot more these days. It went from doing club flyer designs years ago, to sites, then doing photo shoots here and there, to weddings, then filming got in the mix and I was doing small music videos here and there, then weddings, brand films, tv commercials and more.
Majority of my clients contact me to get things done. Yes, they know I film and take photos, but majority of the time, they reach out because they know we’ll make sure it gets done correctly with quality and good vibes!
One huge thing that I take pride in is customer service. I feel like you can do the best work ever, have the top-tier equipment, but if your customer service isn’t on par, then you totally miss! At the end of it all, clients don’t remember what camera or editing software you used, but they never forget the way you made them feel! So, with business on my end, I’m huge on vibes! From myself, as well as the client. When the client receives good work, as well as great customer service, that’s really what makes them recommend you to the next person. That’ what they remember!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative would be helping clients bring their ideas to life!
It takes a lot of listening, planning, arranging and more to make it all happen.
So, to know that clients not only recommend my services, but some are repeat clients, really means a lot to me.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The things that have been the most effective strategies for growing my clientele have been doing overall good business and treating people right.
I feel like if you do what you promote and keep things straight-up with folks, then they end up respecting that a lot more than trying to trick them into services and hoping that something comes from it.
As I mentioned earlier, people remember how you made them feel during the process.
Even if you were late on returning the product…how did you handle it? All of that plays a big role in it.
