We were lucky to catch up with Sean Taylor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Being from a small town in South Carolina that’s always talked down on and left out of bigger conversations, I carried that chip on my shoulder. I wanted to show people that Orangeburg, SC is a goldmine and has so much to offer, so in 2018 I set out to document my city and the people in it. What eventually turned into the documentary-series “Welcome to the Burg,” started out as a collection of footage I took just hanging out with friends.
From early January 2018 to August 2018 I collected footage of my daily life in Orangeburg, and I also got the chance to sit down with creatives and artists I knew to get their perspective on many topics. Everything came to a halt in August 2018 when my camera, hard-drive and about $3000 worth of equipment were stolen from my car.
At first, I was hurt and distraught, but after a while, I learned to take the loss on the chin and not to heart. I kept pushing and I stacked my money up enough to replace all of my camera equipment and buy a better camera. January 2019 came around and I was back collecting footage and reaching out to creatives and entrepreneurs in Orangeburg. After a long journey, in December 2019 I released the first episode of “Welcome to the Burg” on the Sabal Palm Creative Agency YouTube channel. Without a big rollout or paid promotion, I was able to garner over 2000 views on the first episode in a short amount of time. Most people wouldn’t consider that a lot, but to me, it meant the world.
“Welcome to the Burg” has been the most meaningful project I’ve worked on because it’s a passion project close to my heart, and the journey to release it taught me so many lessons about myself and about life.

Sean, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Sean Taylor, affectionately known as Slim, and I am an entrepreneur, artist and traveling photographer based in South Carolina. I am originally from St. Andrews, SC, but Orangeburg, SC is where I consider home. I love art and music, and I initially picked up photography as a hobby as a high school junior in 2011.
In 2013 while attending Coastal Carolina University, I began a clothing brand under the moniker Sabal Palm.
In 2019, I formed Sabal Palm Creative Agency LLC to provide quality creative services, content and products for the culture of South Carolina and beyond. I have worked with many artists, creatives and businesses, including Southern Black Belle. Today, the clothing brand side of Sabal Palm has sold over 3000 units across the United States and even sold units overseas.
I take pride in being able to connect with my clients and my peers on an interpersonal level in order to foster a strong creative relationship. I also have a keen eye for detail and creative nuances, which is reflected in my work and collaborations.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think being my true authentic self and trying to always be good to others has allowed me to garner respect in the field. Networking and being able to connect with people on an interpersonal level, outside of money and clout, is so important. I never wanted to be the person who only works with, or mingles with people for the look. I have formed real working relationships with many creatives and entrepreneurs, and that has allowed me to step in many spaces. Doing good and fair business has also helped build a solid reputation.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, being an inspiration to other people is the most rewarding aspect of being a creative. Nipsey Hussle said “The highest human act is to inspire,” and that’s a mantra I live by. If I can reach just a few people, I’ve done what I’m supposed to do.
