We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sean Ingram. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sean below.
Hi Sean, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful book that I have released to date is my autobiography, From Poverty to Prison to Prosperity.
It means so much to me, because of how much it means, and inspire others.
This book is my autobiography of, WHAT I went through, HOW I got through, and what I learned from it to help me get me to where I am now in life.
WHAT I went through growing up in Poverty.
HOW I ended up in Prison, How I survived Prison, and WHAT I learned from the experience.
I teach the lessons of my process and journey from poverty to prison to prosperity.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always believed and proclaimed that I never chose to be an author and motivational speaker, but yet God chose me.
In my eyes, I was, and in some ways, still the most unlikely candidate to hold this position, especially the blessings and success that I’ve obtained from it.
I grew up poor. I barely graduated high school. I am dyslexic. I had terrible stage fright.
Despite all the odds against me, I was blessed with a gift to write, to see words, and paint pictures with words.
My life’s journey would be the base for my story. The stories that would also unknowingly inspire others.
I started my creative journey as a Spoken Word Artist. Performing my poems on stages.
I didn’t believe in the, starving artist, theory or lifestyle, so I knew I needed to do something aligned with my spoken word that would help generate income.
I definitely wasn’t on the top tier of spoken word artists at the time, so I didn’t see the benefit of releasing a spoken word album that would be in competition with others that would surely over shadow and stunt the sales of my album. Therefore, instead of putting another CD on a table full of CD’s, I decided to put the only book on a table full of CD’s
After many letters and attempts to secure a publishing deal, I never received any opportunities, so at some point, I just decided to do it myself.
I went to art school and studied Graphic Design. I studied the publishing world. In 1999, I successfully self-published my first book, One Man’s Anguish.
I then had to learn the world of distribution. I secured my first distribution deal for my second book, Tears of an Empty Pen.
After that, I was off to the races.
In 2015, instead of always being called to perform spoken word, the calls came for me just to speak and share my journey. I never imagined my life would inspire others.
Spoken Word in time became my path towards Motivational Speaking.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I wrote a quote that says…
“Never allow their resistance be greater than your resilience”
and another that says…
“Success isn’t only about what you can do, but also what you can endure”
My entire journey has been filled with obstacles and pit falls. Every day brings a different challenge, and every level you ascend, the greater the challenges.
I’ve had to overcome and press through self-doubt, financial hardships, mental and emotional depression. The only thing that has kept me going was my belief in the purpose of what I do.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission and ministry is to engage, enlighten, and elevate our youth to stay in school and out of the criminal system.
I utilize my gifts of writing, spoken word, and motivational speaking to inspire. My desire is to encourage others to overcome their obstacles and persevere their process to success and prosperity.
