Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sean Hyman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sean, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
In the investment industry, there are two goals: 1) assets in and 2) retain those assets
So, everything they encourage you to to is in light of those two goals first and any of your goals secondarily. This is my opinion.
What I do at the Logical Investor is help meet the subscriber’s number one need (to grow their portfolios in the best, most prudent way possible. And as I do that, it automatically takes care of me.
In other words, I live life by the Zig Ziglar saying, “You can have anything in life that you want IF you help enough other people get what they want in life.” Therefore, that’s how I run my business. And it’s why people have subscribed to my newsletter from all over the world for up to a decade now.
Sean, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Two of the things that have impacted me the most and morphed into a career has been my faith in God through my Christian faith and growing up poor, learning everything I could to get out of that situation in life.
So, God set me on a course where each stop along the way was a building block to what I do today. I first started in the financial industry as a stock broker with Charles Schwab and later on, a manager over a team of brokers for them.
Later on, I went to work for a currency-trading market maker, Forex Capital Markets (FXCM) and it taught me more about global finance and what made money flow around the world and into one economy and away from another, etc.
Before it was all said and done, I had a background in stocks, currencies and commodities and I’d obtained five financial licenses (Series 7, 63, 9, 10, and 3).
Later on, I was able to get my start in the financial newsletter publishing industry where I got to work for some of the largest publishers in the nation, such as the Agora company (The Sovereign Society), Newsmax and The Maven.
Later on, I went out on my own and formed my own investing website (www.logicalinvestor.net) where I get to have more control over the content and I can get information to subscribers in a timelier fashion.
Through my newsletters, weekly videos and daily forum interactions on my site, they’ll certainly learn more about investing and the exact investments we’re buying, selling and why. I’m able to help anyone who’s never opened up their first brokerage account to make their first stock investment, to a small/beginning investor, to fairly seasoned investors and help them add to their financial education through our three forums of analysis: fundamental analysis (a company’s soundness/cheapness), technical analysis (stock chart reading) and sentiment analysis (learning to read the sentiment of the masses) so that they can do the opposite and learn to be the successful contrarian.
What I’m most proud of is that I’ve had investors subscribe for up to a decade and add to their learning each and every year and become better and better stock investors…even if they formerly had no background or experience with investing at all.
I’ve got several products services on the site: It all starts with the Logical Investor stock market newsletter that’s put out monthly, along with weekly videos and daily forum interactions. It’s $19.97 per month with no contract. Cancel anytime.
But I’ve also got a stock trading service (trading, not investing) and an options trading service as well, for those that want to learn how to be an effective trader. I launched these services because I’ve seen traders make all the same wrong mistakes and I can save them a lot of time.
I’ve also written an e-book on personal finances called The Six Keys To Financial Success. It gives a biblical view of your personal finances and goes over principles that you’ll likely never hear in church in a sermon. I’ve also got Option Trading Demystified. I wrote it because every book I’ve ever read on options was way too difficult to understand and I knew I could teach it in a simple way without giving complex formulas or discussing a lot of Greek symbols, etc.
And finally, I’ve got some reports that I have on the site that teach ways to derive extra income through options and even ways to “capture dividends” over short periods of time of holding a stock and turn the stock market into a semi-passive income stream for you. It’s called the Dividend Capture Report in the Store tab on the site.
What my subscriber base probably most appreciates about what I do is how simple I teach and how each I make things to understand and implement. You’ll find it to be a very helpful site. No ego or attitudes. Just subscribers aiding other subscribers in their journey. They’re especially helpful to newer investors. It’s a very healthy place on the internet to learn how to steward one’s finances/investments. And I thank God for that.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Sure! Like I mentioned earlier, I grew up poor. I saw it as “starting life behind the start line”. Yet, I saw it in a positive light…not the poverty part but that it “lit a fire under my tail-end to learn how to get out of it” and then to turn around and to show others the way, so that it wouldn’t take them as long as it did for me. So, I was able to take what started out as a bad situation in life and turn it into an entire career that aids people in growing their net worth’s all over the planet.
All along that journey, I had negativity crop up here and there along the way. “You’re not smart enough to pass those financial licenses”, etc. Yet, not only did I get one or two licenses like every financial person gets but I pushed through to obtain five of them that cover the stock market, currency market and commodity market.
Not only did I obtain the licenses and aid our brokerage client base but later on went on to start my own newsletters and do TV interviews on CNBC, Bloomberg TV, Fox News, Fox Business, etc. to aid the public in their knowledge about the economy/markets.
So, just as I’ve “pushed through” and have maintained the persistence to meet my goals (despite what others close to me said), I know anyone reading this can do the same.
There are several voices in our lives. (Our own voice, the voice of others, God’s voice, the devil’s voice, etc.). Depending on which one you give space in your mind and focus on will determine much of your outcome in life. I learned to ignore what others said negatively about me and I certainly didn’t entertain any devilish, negative thought that came my way. Instead, I joined my voice along with God’s voice through the Bible and said what He said about me (and everyone). As I did, I spoke into existence a future that was better than I could have ever dreamed of.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
There’s a lot of landmines in the investing industry. It would seem that if you just turned on financial TV (CNBC, Fox, etc. ) and listened to analyst upgrades of stocks and downgrades of stocks, and news releases, etc. that you could just follow that and be successful in investing. However, what works is very far from that.
You’ll likely have to unlearn what your broker teaches you, what financial people on TV teach, etc. in order to become a truly contrarian investor and to steward your money in a way that few do. The masses aren’t successful. Yet people want to follow and do what a bunch of people are doing.
Yet, I had to learn from guys like Warren Buffett, Sir John Templeton, etc. to learn a different way of thinking that was the reverse of what seems natural in investment thinking. The right thought processes produce, over time, the right investment results.
