We were lucky to catch up with Sean Hussey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sean, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
The role and responsibility of the producer is one that is hard to learn on paper. As the esteemed Christine Vachon once said, “The job of producer is one of the great mysteries of the moviemaking process.” The ability to be able to run budgets, lead meetings, raise money, work with talent, build schedules, and so much more is not something you can learn overnight. It takes years of experience and I am only scratching the surface of what it means to produce film and television professionally.
I often remind my peers and mentees that patience is key when producing. It can take years for projects to come to fruition, and it can take even longer to learn all the skills to bring a project from conception to completion. All I wish I did differently is I wish I did more projects, so I could learn more skills and have stronger experiences to grow from. The only obstacle that stands in the way of that is time, and of course yourself. While I am incredibly proud of every project I’ve worked on thus far in my short career, I always wish I could have done the other dozen I had to turn down.

Sean, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Sean Hussey and I am a film, television, and podcast producer. I am a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and am currently a Development Coordinator for 507 Collective as well as the President of The Aspect Co.
I began producing about three years ago after spending around six years in the pop culture journalism and content creation space. I have worked with companies such as Gearbox Entertainment, Coca-Cola Refreshing Films, Epic Games / Quixel, and Movado Jewelry. I excel in story development as well as project management.
More recently, I have moved to the Los Angeles area and am producing independent feature films as well as launching a new media production company called The Aspect, which specializes in video and audio podcasts, as well as social media content. We are a one-stop-shop for creators who are looking to either join a larger network, or who want to elevate their current content both in professionalism and marketing. We officially launch in Q1 of 2024.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
One of the best resources I often point my peers to is Luminate Film & TV, previously known as Variety Insight. This is a great website that, similar to IMDb, offers a who’s who of the entertainment industry. One of the reasons I recommend Luminate over IMDb, however, is that it has great resources for company org charts and contact information for industry professionals. It is a great way to connect with potential partners, mentors, or get a good foot in the door at companies young professionals may be interested in working for.
I really wish I had known about this site earlier in my career as I believe it would have been incredibly resourceful and helpful to secure connections with people who could have helped me secure internships or jobs earlier in my career,

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
By far the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in this industry is helping to bring other’s vision to life. As a producer, I am often working closely with the most gifted writers and directors, who have worldviews and perspectives I could only wish to have. To be able to bring the practicality to their vision and to help realize it is a reward that is hard to match.
By far my proudest and most rewarding project thus far has been ‘Carved in Stone’, an action-adventure short film from director Porter Justus. ‘Carved in Stone’ was the culmination of years of hard work, hundreds of cast and crew, and tireless efforts to bring it to life. It is rare that you get the opportunity to work with subject matter like Arthurian legend or technology like an LED Volume at such a young age, but for us, pushing the boundaries of what we could achieve at this stage of our careers was such a crucial part of bringing the project to life. There is no greater reward than that.
