Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sean Green. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Sean thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I had been working as the head writer of MTV’s Ridiculousness for the previous four seasons and renewal time came around. During this time I was also really growing my company, SGPN, Sports Gambling Podcast Network and while it wasn’t generating the same income as my writing job it felt like the prime opportunity to transition.
When the renewal deal came through as a very low ball offer, I took it as a sign to not go back for more seasons and to fully transition to SGPN. It was a real leap of faith at the time, but the growth the company has seen since I made that decision has been massive. Burning the candle at both ends wasn’t sustainable and making the decision to go full time with SGPN was the right one in hindsight, but a difficult decision at the time.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I always had a passion for stand up comedy and sports. I combined those two when I started co-hosting The Sports Gambling Podcast.
The Sports Gambling Podcast provides daily sports gambling content that’s irreverent, entertaining and informative. So much sports gambling content out there is so dry, our funny approach to the industry has really allowed us to separate ourselves as a brand. The inspiration came from a bunch of talk radio icons I enjoyed listening to over the years including Howard Stern, Adam Carolla and late night talk show hosts like Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O’Brien.
This unique combination along with a ton of work has really allowed to grow our brand and our reach. I’ve very proud of how far we’ve come including the fact that we’ve set a new record for downloads for our company with 1,000,000 in the past 30 days.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I’m really excited about the world of NFTs especially in the sports world. Our company SGPN covers Zed Racing, which is pretty exciting it allows people to own their own digital race horses as NFTs and race them for a chance to win cryptocurrency. You can also breed and manage your digital race horse NFTs as well and it’s pretty cool.
I also think sports collectible NFTs like NBA’s Top Show and NFL’s All Day are really exciting as well. Instead of owning a physical trading card, you own a digital NFT highlight of your favorite player.
NFTs have a very exciting future in the sports world.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Authenticity is huge on social media. Ironically if you’re sharing or creating content with the sole goal of gaining followers or getting attention those strategies seem to be the least successful.
To me it’s really a two part process, part one is identify your specific audience, the more niche the better. Who are you looking to connect with? What community are you looking to become a part of?
Once you identify that community how do you provide value to them? What are you adding to the community to make yourself a worthwhile follow.
If you take time to answer those two questions you’ll be in a good spot.
