We were lucky to catch up with Sean Garvey recently and have shared our conversation below.

SEAN, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?

How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business?

I feel great every time I ask for support. It let’s me know who my real supporters are and who aren’t.

What’s appropriate, what’s not?

Using active listening and and being professional is appropriate. Being very unprofessional and getting emotional when rejected is not appropriate.

Where do you draw the line?

I draw the line when it comes to lack of integrity. The importance of integrity means a lot to my production brand.

Any interesting stories or anecdotes you can share that influenced your view or that illustrate why you feel how you feel?

Yes. I have plenty.

SEAN, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I am a native of Atlanta, Georgia. I own a media production company called Reach One Communications, I’m also a mental health advocate and my hobbies include writing, playing pool, building things, playing basketball, exercising, and reading.

How you got into your industry / business / discipline / craft etc,

I started working in radio at the age of 19. I started out volunteering for free at a local community radio station in Atlanta, Georgia and I build plenty of relationships from working in commercial radio, television, movies, podcasts, and more.

What type of products/services/creative works you provide,

My team and I provide production content, writing scripts, editing audio, and selling television airtime to clients looking to get their content on a streaming platform.

What problems you solve for your clients

I helped solved technical problems for clients who may be facing with not being able to convert certain files into an mp3 or mp4 format, how to download an app to their mobile devices, who need consultation on how to start a podcast, and who need assistance in editing commercials or content that they may not be able to do it themselves.

and/or what you think sets you apart from others

What sets me and my company apart from everyone else is integrity. I help curate positive content for all ages and use them to send a message on how healthy dialogue can bring forth change to our societal norms.

What are you most proud of and what are the main things you want potential clients/followers/fans to know about you/your brand/your work/ etc.

I am most proud of creating my own team of volunteers soon to be staff members for my own company and having some form of ownership that I can pass down to my next generation. The main things I want my potential clients to know about my brand is that we are a new innovative streaming channel that highlights entertaining and educational content for audiences to embrace and enjoy.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

I had to pivot from working in radio broadcasting for 21 years to working for Homeland Security for 7 months. The transition was a interesting period in my life because it show me that I can do more than just create content or do anything related to media. I was able to showcase my skill in working outside of my element by participating in humanitarian work .

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?

The advice I want to offer is to select the right kind of people that are not looking for a huge payday or to get a big job title. Recruit people who believe in the vision of a project, don’t mind working for free for a short period of time, very professional people and communication skills, and can be a team player.
