Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sean Dunbar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sean, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I am very blessed to have to parents who have been nothing but supportive of my dreams my entire life. Although they may push me sometimes, I am grateful to have them. I am absolutely blessed to have them in my life. There are a lot of people who don’t have tight knit families, and having one is something I will never take for granted. They have taught me everything I know. They have taught me that is okay to fail, that I should follow my dreams, but more importantly, how to love one another and be thankful for what I have. It is because of them that I am the person I am today.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a songwriter and guitarist born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. I am now living in Nashville, Tennessee. I first started playing guitar when I was in the fourth grade. I grew up watching shows such as Americas Got Talent and American Idol and instantly fell in love with music. I remember sneaking downstairs and hiding around the hallway just so I could listen to the next person audition after my parents told me to go to bed. When I got to high school is when I really started taking music seriously and writing my own songs. I have never been much of a singer but something about sharing stories through music just gives me a feeling I can’t get from anything else. People in high school often made fun of me for it. I was on the hockey team and it wasn’t necessarily cool to “write songs” or “do music”. However, i continued to do what I loved and I am proud that I did. After all, I would not be where I am if it weren’t for the people who tried to bring me down. I decided I was going to move to Nashville and dedicate my life to music after a close friend of mine passed away. She always supported me and told me to follow my dream. Her name was Jill Pisano. She was an incredible woman. I carry her memory with me where ever I go. I hope one day she will look down and be proud of all that I have accomplished.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My audience on social media all started with a tiktok video of me playing piano while my friend Grace sang. It got over a million views in a day. When I woke up to all the support I finally realized that people liked what I do. That is what pushed me to continue.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of what I do is knowing that my songs and my stories are something that people can relate to. I often get messages saying that my song helped them in some sort of way. I was doing a live stream one night where a young girl came on and asked me to play a few of her favorite songs. She had privately messaged me later that night saying that I “saved her life” because she was planning on committing suicide but didn’t because I was the only person that acknowledged and listened to her. Out of all the compliments I have received, that is the one that will always stick with me no matter where I end up on this journey.
