We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sean Dorsey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sean thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Firstly, to be successful, you must define success criteria and objectives; this is industry-agnostic. Whether you are a small business, a major corporation, or an artist, you need to work toward a goal. I like to focus on Minimal Viable Products (MVPs). For example, when a client provides a mission and vision for their business or brand, my first thought is to decompose this vision into smaller incremental deliverables. If you are an artist, I would consider completing your first “successful” photoshoot, album cover, logo, website, etc. The success criteria may include likes, visits, sales, or clicks. Key performance indices (KPIs), such as views per duration, can also be leveraged to gauge success. Businesses review website visits, conversion rates, brand recognition, etc.
Once success is defined, you must have the mindset to succeed. Actions start with thoughts. I attempt to extract information and develop a vision. Clients often become motivated when they recognize the value of seeing high-quality visuals, intuitive websites, impactful advertisements, and clean and attractive branding. Witnessing a vision develop into reality motivates my clients. From that point, consistency is key: appealing to your audience and maintaining their interest.
Lastly, my definition of success is delivering value to my clients. If I create a campaign that leads to the success of a business or individual, I have effectively done my job. I always want clients to see a return on their investment.
Sean , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My business acumen and creativity marry. I was born an artist. As a child, I learned that I had a talent for drawing. Later in life, I pursued a career in information technology, which piqued my interest in digital art. I evolved into a Technical Project Manager. During the pandemic, I added music production to my toolkit.
So, how is that all related? When a person has a vision and wants to bring that vision to life, that is considered a project. Examples of projects include developing websites, designing flyers, drafting logos, and producing commercials. I plan marketing campaigns with a strategy and timeline, then execute them using a digital art skillset.
I recognize how vital visuals and innovation are to society. Every business or brand needs an image and someone to bring it to life. I want to be the one-stop shop. Companies or individuals with weak marketing campaigns are undifferentiated; therefore, standing out amongst your competitors is essential.
I love working with musicians: producing music, shooting videos, doing photoshoots, creating online campaigns, etc
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I am known for creating marketing that “stands out.” Over a decade ago, I produced the quality of visuals many AI tools produce today. Then, it was rare to see some combine photography with graphics to create a composition. I worked with some of the most successful artists in the industry. Major magazines published my work, and I’ve even seen my work in major retailers like Walmart, Amazon Prime, and Redbox.
I designed standard flyers and added illustrations, photography, and cinema photography. Through hard work and great relationships, I built a clientele; the rest is history.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Now, I focus on working with artists. I produce music, shoot videos, and develop marketing campaigns. Kamp Ikon is my company; its goal is to make artists IKONIC by combining my skills with their talents. It is not easy; there is a lot of competition. However, leveraging social media can help develop the fanbase. It takes hard work and consistency. I love working with indie artists.
