We recently connected with Sean Crouch and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sean thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
In January 2024, I encountered a side of corporate life that forced me to reconsider my commitment to the traditional 9-to-5. It was the catalyst I hadn’t realized I was waiting for—a stark reminder that perhaps it was time to leave behind the predictable path and take a chance on building something of my own. So, I made the decision to quit my job.
The first few months were filled with uncertainty. I felt lost, overwhelmed, and frankly, scared. But in a moment of clarity, I sat down and mapped out a business plan. I outlined a strategy for my brand, Loopholez, and for the first time, I saw how achievable my dream could be.
I invested every penny I had saved into bringing my vision to life. At the outset, it felt like an enormous gamble. The competition was fierce, and breaking into the market seemed nearly impossible. But with time, the risk began to pay off. Now, Loopholez has a growing, loyal clientele—a tangible reminder that sometimes the scariest risks lead to the most rewarding outcomes.

Sean, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
From a young age, I’ve always considered myself a creative individual, and fortunately, my parents cultivated an environment where I could fully explore and express this creativity. Their support gave me the freedom to experiment and develop new skills on my own. It wasn’t long before I discovered my true passion: the fashion industry. This led me to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), where I honed my expertise in branding and marketing—critical skills that turned the seemingly daunting idea of starting my own company into something not just possible, but achievable.
Creating a crochet brand is not easy. The journey is filled with challenges, from navigating the complexities of the craft itself to carving out a niche in an already crowded market. When I first set out, my vision was to create unique clothing and accessories—beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces that stood apart from the norm. But I quickly realized that such an ambitious goal wasn’t realistic in the early stages. Instead, I focused on more accessible products, such as plush animals and home décor, items that were not only appealing to a wide audience but also marketable in a competitive space.
The next step was getting my name out there. I attended farmers’ markets every week, not just to sell, but to showcase the quality of my work. It was about building trust with customers—showing them that what I created wasn’t just another handmade item, but a piece made with care, craftsmanship, and dedication.
One crucial lesson I learned was that starting a brand isn’t just about creating what you love—it’s about listening to your customers. What do they want? What are they looking for? I realized that by engaging with them directly, I could refine my offerings to meet their needs. This led to an important pivot: I began taking custom orders. What started as a small part of my business has now become a cornerstone of my brand.
Today, custom orders are a vital aspect of my work, and I’ve developed an open-door policy to make sure my clients feel heard and valued. Whether they have a specific design in mind or want something personalized, I’ve made it my priority to bring their vision to life. This connection with my customers has allowed me to grow not just in numbers, but in the depth of trust and community that surrounds my brand.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Looking back on my corporate days, I remember the relentless early mornings filled with a sense of dread. The daily grind felt like a never-ending cycle, with no spark of motivation to fuel me. Work was a burden.
Now, things couldn’t be more different. I still wake up early, but instead of dragging myself out of bed, I’m eager to dive into the day. There’s a new excitement in my mornings. The projects I started yesterday are a source of anticipation, not obligation, and the thought of sitting down in my studio to sketch fresh concepts fills me with purpose.
The shift is nothing short of transformative. What was once a life driven by routine and necessity has now become one fueled by passion and creativity. I’m grateful for this newfound sense of direction, and for the drive that has replaced the dread.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Many people who don’t see themselves as creative often fail to grasp the immense effort and dedication required to bring something new into existence. Creativity isn’t a straightforward process; it’s layered, messy, and time-consuming. Mastery doesn’t happen overnight—it takes years, if not decades, to refine a skill. The time invested in creating something is a concept that’s difficult for most to fully comprehend.
Take the world of crochet, for example. Unlike machine-made goods, every crocheted item is the product of painstaking, manual labor. There’s no machine that can replicate the intricate, personal touch of handcrafting a piece. A seemingly simple item might take hours to complete, while a custom gown can take a hundred or more. Behind every thread, stitch, and design is not just time, but passion, skill, and self-expression.
So, the next time you encounter someone who is using their creativity as a form of expression, remember: it’s not just about the final product. It’s about the countless hours, the trial and error, and the emotional energy poured into every moment of creation. Their work isn’t merely something to admire; it’s a reflection of their dedication, talent, and heart.
