Sean, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Your ability to build a team is often a key determinant of your success as a business owner and so we’d love to get a conversation going with successful entrepreneurs like yourself around what your recruiting process was like -especially early on. How did you build your team?
Certainly, I appreciate the curiosity about our journey. When we started our company, it was just the two of us navigating uncharted waters. The initial days were a mix of excitement and challenge, as we tried to lay the foundation for what would become our venture. Recruiting those first team members was a crucial step, and we knew we needed individuals who not only possessed the skills we were looking for but also resonated with the values we held dear – loyalty and edge coupled with compassion. We understood that building a team was not just about finding people with the right qualifications, but those who could genuinely connect with the ethos of our company.
Finding the right individuals was a process that involved networking, leveraging industry connections, and, of course, a fair share of trial and error. We sought out people who shared our vision and were willing to invest not just in their roles, but in the culture we were building.
The interview process was designed to be a two-way street. We weren’t just evaluating candidates; we wanted them to understand who we were, what we stood for, and the kind of environment they were stepping into. This transparency helped filter out those who might not align with our values.
In terms of the training process, we aimed for a blend of conventional wisdom and some unique elements. We recognized the importance of industry-standard training, but we also emphasized a hands-on, collaborative approach. This allowed our team members to not only understand their individual roles but also how they fit into the larger picture of our company.
The journey of building a team is an ongoing one, and we continue to learn and evolve. It’s not just about finding the right people; it’s about nurturing an environment where they can thrive and contribute to the shared success of our venture.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I graduated from Hofstra University with a degree in TV and Film, setting the stage for my entrance into the dynamic world of entertainment.
My foray into the industry began at Scott Rudin Productions, where I had the privilege of working for four transformative years. Two of those years were spent collaborating with Disney, and the subsequent two brought me into the fold of Sony. These experiences were instrumental in shaping my understanding of the industry, honing my skills, and fostering a deep passion for creative storytelling.
One of the aspects I’m most proud of is our ability to navigate the intersection of creativity and business seamlessly. We don’t just see ourselves as storytellers; we are problem solvers. Our work is not only about captivating audiences but also about addressing the unique challenges and objectives of our clients.
What I want potential clients, followers, and fans to know about us is that we are driven by a passion for storytelling that goes beyond the surface. We believe in the transformative power of narrative, and our commitment to excellence is reflected in every project we undertake.
Our brand is synonymous with innovation, authenticity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. We invite our audience to join us on a journey where each story is a unique experience, crafted with precision and delivered with a commitment to leaving a lasting impact.
In a world inundated with content, we stand out not just for the stories we tell, but for the way we tell them — with authenticity, creativity, and a dedication to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the realm of entertainment.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the most challenging lessons I had to unlearn in the business realm was the assumption that everyone operates with your best interests at heart. The backstory behind this realization unfolded in our first year of business, a period marked by hard work, successful sales of intellectual property, and significant contributions to a client’s success.
Despite our dedication and positive impact, we found ourselves on the receiving end of less-than-ideal outcomes. It was a bitter pill to swallow, realizing that not every business relationship is built on mutual respect and reciprocity. We had to confront the harsh reality that, in the world of business, self-interest can sometimes override collaboration and goodwill.
This experience taught us the importance of setting clear expectations, establishing robust contracts, and maintaining a healthy level of skepticism, even in seemingly positive partnerships. While it was disheartening to realize that not every collaboration would be a win-win scenario, it was a crucial lesson in navigating the complexities of the business landscape.
The key takeaway was learning not to internalize these experiences. It’s natural to invest not just time and effort but also emotions into your work. However, understanding that business dynamics can be driven by various factors, including self-interest, helped us develop a more resilient mindset. We learned to separate the personal from the professional and approach business relationships with a balanced blend of optimism and pragmatism.
In essence, unlearning the assumption that everyone has your best interest at heart allowed us to approach collaborations with a more discerning eye, ensuring that our business decisions are grounded in a realistic understanding of the diverse motivations that may come into play. While it was a tough lesson, it ultimately strengthened our ability to navigate the complexities of the business world with a clearer perspective.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Certainly, our journey in attracting new clients has been multifaceted. While various avenues have contributed, two standout sources have been referrals and showcases. These channels have proven to be particularly effective in not only bringing in new clients but also in fostering a positive and organic growth trajectory for our business.
Referrals, rooted in the satisfaction and trust of existing clients, have been instrumental. When clients recommend our services to others, it’s a testament to the quality of our work and the positive relationships we’ve cultivated. This word-of-mouth marketing creates a powerful ripple effect, as potential clients come to us with a level of trust and confidence, having heard about our capabilities and commitment from those who have experienced it firsthand.
Showcases have also played a pivotal role. Whether through industry events, exhibitions, or online platforms, showcasing our work allows us to present our creativity and expertise to a broader audience. It serves as a tangible demonstration of what sets us apart, providing potential clients with a firsthand glimpse into the quality and innovation we bring to the table.
Social media, with its expansive reach and engagement potential, has been a complementary force. It allows us to connect with a global audience, share our portfolio, and engage in conversations with potential clients. The interactive nature of social media fosters a sense of community and allows us to convey the personality of our brand, making it not just about the services we offer but the values we embody.
In essence, our approach is synergistic, leveraging the power of personal recommendations, tangible showcases, and the expansive reach of social media. It’s a dynamic mix that aligns with our commitment to authenticity, quality, and meaningful connections. As we continue to evolve, these sources remain integral to our strategy, reflecting the diverse ways in which we connect with and attract clients who resonate with our vision and capabilities.
