We were lucky to catch up with Sean Beiersdorfer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sean , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’re complete cheeseballs and so we love asking folks to share the most heartwarming moment from their career – do you have a touching moment you can share with us?
Before yoga – I was dead set on making it as a rock n roll drummer – playing in bands at a young age I taught myself how to play drums.
When it came time to tune my drums or buy gear I’d be lost, and that’s where my friend Bryan came in.(also a fellow drummer ) Bryan would show me the ropes and pretty much tune and change my drum heads for me as I’d be in awww with how complex it seemed.
We did not just play in bands – we were friends.
Fast forward – time caused us to find our own paths and one day after I’d been teaching yoga for only about 2 years – Bryan reached out for a favor asking If I can help him in taking pictures of yoga postures for a college class of his- of course I agreed.
On the back end of this – I was getting asked to do private yoga sessions and had no idea what to charge or what the worth of my offerings were. I explained to another friend that I was helping Bryan out and this particular person said that I should charge and ask for money because what I do is not free.
I felt very conflicted, but in the end I reached out to Bryan and said hey this is my job I’d have to charge you for this listening to my other particular friend and not my gut or intuition or heart.
I never got a response from Bryan .
This was 2017- so fast forward to 2022 Mutual friends of ours were taking my class at uptown yoga – after one class I asked our mutual friend how Bryan was and asked for his phone number to reach out and apologize for not helping him . This weighed on me- all the times he helped me -how could I not help him , I wanted to tell him I didn’t take ownership of my thoughts or actions and was going off what someone said I “should” do.
I never made the call
2 weeks after I got his number – I played a live show with friends and as I sat at the bar – I heard my name called , I turned and Bryan was sitting right next to me – I hadn’t seen him in years/ hadn’t talked since 2017..
In this moment he welcomed my apology with forgiveness and became a great teacher in that moment to remind me to let things go and keep loving those around you.
We don’t know how much time we have here, I’m happy I got the opportunity to express my gratitude for him as well as take ownership of my thoughts and actions . Some of us aren’t so lucky –
Be kind to people – we don’t know that others stories are all we can do is show love – communicate – and let each other know that we are doing our best.
Tell the people around you you love them and how much they mean – money comes and goes – but connection and people in our lives don’t ❤️.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My yoga journey started in 2015 burnt out after being in bands and not getting anywhere – yoga saved me.
Yoga gave me a purpose to go deeper into myself and really find out who I was and wanted to become .
I was lucky enough to have a lot of wonderful teachers early in my career.
Just like when you enjoy all kinds of music it makes you fluent in different ways- I had the most dynamic yogis teaching me different styles – taking me to workshops and finally even branching out NYC and other places to do trainings.
As I started to see the structure of classes – the one thing that hit me the most was when teachers brought “themes” to class.
I now pry myself on “the Why” what are we moving for today?
What is the purpose behind my movement? – self love or trust or discipline – themes add purpose to our postures and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable and let the energy of the class sink in has really made changes in my teachings and breakthroughs for the students.
I also believe – Sound healing is one of my specialties- I hope to do more trainings to learn more of the “secrets” behind the vibrations- but deep inside my soul of music I know how healing sound can be on some level.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Showing up authentically and believing in myself .
I didn’t wanna leave my first yoga home – but as it was coming to an end – I knew I had to go somewhere at the time to help hone my skills and get me out to the public.
After graduating from a program that really helped me find my teaching voice and words my goal was to teach everywhere in dallas I wanted to. And my mission was accomplished over the last 5 years.
Whether it was different teachers who saw potential in me and brought me in to new studios or students word of
Mouth to different owners letting them know who I was and what I did was so special and different.
Each place I went I did things a little different in the class depending on what the class needed –
What I did not and will
Never do differently is show up not my organic self – each place I went I used my voice I used my theme I used my power of confidence even when it wasn’t strong to help others feel there best. Authenticity goes along way when you own and love the fact that who you are is special .
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Yes – I specifically remember being scared of yoga – but in my superficial mind at the time I would say “well I can’t wait to do yoga some day so I can have an amazing body lol”
We all find things when we are meant to the only regret is that u didn’t start sooner.
