We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sean Augustin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sean, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
My first venture into the world of creativity and entrepreneurship began during my elementary school days. Back then, my classmates would eagerly offer me money in exchange for my drawings of cartoon and comic characters. It was a humble start, but it ignited a passion that would shape my future endeavors.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I found my passion for design at the age of 18, when a friend approached me with an exciting opportunity to contribute to their clothing line as a designer. This marked the beginning of my foray into the world of creativity, and I haven’t looked back since.
As a designer, I offer a diverse range of creative services. From crafting captivating logos to creating custom art pieces, designing clothing, and even tattoo designs, my creativity knows no bounds. However, I refuse to confine myself to a single box. I’ve also ventured into designing car kits, skateboards, and illustrating books, constantly pushing the boundaries of my craft.
One of the key problems I aim to solve for my clients is the challenge of bringing their visions to life. I pride myself on my ability to truly listen to my clients, understanding both their spoken desires and the unspoken nuances of their vision. By being readily available and attentive, I ensure that their ideas are not only heard but also translated into designs that exceed their expectations.
What sets me apart from others in the industry is my unwavering dedication to my clients’ satisfaction. I take great pride in my ability to understand their vision and breathe life into it through my designs. Additionally, I’m immensely proud of the evolution of my work over the years and the opportunity to pursue my passion while earning a living.
Above all, I want everyone to know that they shouldn’t hesitate to ask for what they want. Whether it’s a bold new design concept or a subtle tweak to an existing idea, I’m here to turn their vision into reality. And remember, my brand is constantly growing and evolving, so don’t limit your expectations to what you see on social media—I’m always open to new challenges and opportunities to showcase my creativity.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve had to unlearn on my creative journey revolves around the misconception that the most popular and expensive equipment is essential for producing quality work.
Early on in my career, there was a particular piece of equipment that I believed was crucial for achieving the level of quality I aspired to. However, the hefty price tag placed it far out of my reach at the time. Frustrated by my financial limitations, I initially felt disheartened and convinced that without this equipment, I wouldn’t be able to produce work of the caliber I desired.
But as time went on, I came to realize that quality work isn’t solely determined by the tools you use, but rather by the dedication and effort you invest in your craft. Instead of fixating on what I didn’t have, I focused on honing my skills with the resources available to me. I experimented, practiced relentlessly, and sought out alternative methods to achieve the results I envisioned.
Through this process, I discovered that creativity knows no bounds and that ingenuity often thrives in the face of limitations. By embracing a mindset of resourcefulness and perseverance, I was able to produce work that not only met but exceeded my own expectations.
In the end, I learned that while having access to top-of-the-line equipment can certainly enhance the creative process, true excellence lies in the dedication, passion, and hard work you bring to your craft. This realization has been a transformative lesson that continues to shape my approach to creativity and reminds me that the most valuable tools are the ones cultivated within oneself.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
My view on NFTs is one of curiosity and exploration. Currently, I’m actively researching the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to gain a deeper understanding of their potential implications and opportunities within the creative landscape.
While I haven’t yet fully integrated NFTs into my creative journey, I recognize their growing significance and the potential they hold for artists and creators. From digital art to music, collectibles, and beyond, NFTs offer a novel way to authenticate and monetize digital assets, revolutionizing how we perceive ownership and value in the digital world.
As I delve deeper into my research, I’m excited by the possibilities that NFTs present and the potential they hold to shape the future of creativity and commerce. While it’s uncertain whether NFTs will become a central part of my creative journey, I’m open to exploring how they might complement and enhance my work in the future.
