We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Scotty Banx. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Scotty below.
Alright, Scotty thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I’m actually at a point in life now where I wonder what life would be like if I never wanted to do anything creatively and just had the goal of going to college, getting a good job and starting a family. There’s nothing wrong with that by the way for anyone reading this, it just wasn’t my plan. I won’t say I’m unhappy, just curious about life without this dream. I’ve been actively recording and producing music since I was 12. I’m 28 now. I feel like it’s natural to wonder what things would be like if I’d done them differently at some point. It’s human nature.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
First of all I’m an artist before anything. I built a reputation as a guy that can get behind the boards and engineer/produce very well, but that’s because I’m an artist first. So I know what the artist wants. I’ve been writing raps since I was about 6 years old (2001) and recorded my first project in 2008 when I was about to turn 13. That experience is what caused me to become so proficient at engineering. Even at 12 years old I couldn’t understand why I would be paying someone to record in their closet at home. So I got my own home setup and learned everything I could, everyday. I’m now the owner of a recording studio called “The 1045” along with my same friends that helped me get so good at recording and mixing by working on their music. We built a studio to be an incubation hub for upcoming artists just like us. 1045 Where Dreams Come Alive. For Artists, By Artists. I’m proud to say that I approach each project with the same level of care as I do my own and that’s why people love to record with me. We also have the lowest rates with the highest quality at just $45/hr for recording and $50/song for mixing AND mastering.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
The way we think is just different. I don’t see movies the same as normal people. I don’t hear music the same as normal people. While the average person gets to just have fun and consume the art, I can’t help but dissect it. It’s a gift and a curse.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to take what I’m feeling in the moment, articulate it properly through a given medium and have someone reach out to me telling me that they connected with it as well. That genuine connection and love for my art is more important than having the most followers or trying to force a hit record. People are really being moved by what I do. That’s priceless.
