We recently connected with Scotte Mac and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Scotte thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents split when I was pretty young, about 3 years old or so. My Dad was in my life a few years later but the two things they drummed into me was always educate yourself in whatever you get into, and never be afraid to leave your familiar surroundings, explore the world. Education and leaving the fear of the unknown behind. Thinking that way helped me meet so many different people and have so many different experiences in life. I notice alot of people stunt their growth by being content or scared to leave familiarity.
Scotte, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I knew what I wanted to do the second I heard The Message. I was gonna be in the rap game one way or another. I started out rapping very young, 10 years old, and it became serious and making money from it when I was about 19 or so. I was with group called Midwest Domination and we actually toured the country by way of Spaulding for Children. My Mother worked for them and they were trying to figure a way to bridge the gap between rap/hip hop amongst the adoptive parents and social workers. They couldn’t understand the influence it had. We received a grant to got speak with adoptive parents and social workers on how the culture influences the youth. That was my real introduction to the business and money making side of the game. We did that with my Mother for a few years and another rapper by the name of Ultramaddness began to tour with just me and my Mother. After that was up I wasn’t into making music anymore so I took a short break and came up with the idea of starting an internet radio station called I.M.M Radio *Independent Music Movement*. I did that for almost 10 years with a team at first and it was podcasting. I started doing real time radio with my co-host Crazy Nate who now has his own show called Chases Basement. We had alot of success with it, won some awards, had alot of fun but I saw the radio game becoming over saturated. Fast forward a few years, in 2020 to be exact, Some guys who’s music I use to play on my station who I had become good friends with came to visit me on my birthday and DalladdaCorp was born. We’ve been putting out videos and music for a good solid 4 years now. I’m finally where I need and wanted to be in the game and the right people around me.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I know it was when I did radio. I played all independent music all the time. People remember me and respect me for that. I gave people chances when they couldn’t get a chance anywhere else. Anyone when my name is mentioned will say “Yea, the radio guy, he cool.”
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There have been a few books but the one that stuck out to me and I apply is 50 Cents book, Hustle Harder, Hustle Smarter. A very good read or even audiobook for someone trying to get ahead in any business setting.
