We were lucky to catch up with Scott Waldman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Scott, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I moved to LA in 2003 with three grand, my guitar, bass, and a LOT of band t-shirts. I had just graduated from The University of Michigan a few months prior and decided to try my luck as a performer in the music industry, as it was my true love despite its challenges… and it worked. I signed with Columbia Records one year and three months after moving here, and it was very validating.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
1. Artist management – Accidentally, actually… but I’ve been doing it for almost a decade now! I feel that I understand things from a musician’s perspective and that I have actual empathy for their respective plights.
2. Journalist – I currently freelance write for The Hard Times. My degree is in English, which helps, but my passion for all things music is what got me there.
3. Frontman for Lido Beach – I had a plethora of songs prior to joining The City Drive as a bassist and back-up vocalist, and said tunes came to fruition after I quit The City Drive.

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
My clients usually get regular weekly or biweekly calls, which sets me apart from other artist managers who sometimes prefer minimal contact and/or have an assistant or day-to-day manage the minutia.

How’d you meet your business partner?
Initially I started this company with a friend I had known for a few years, but that ended quickly. Now it’s my own show!
