Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Scott Wainwright. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Scott, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects that I ever worked was my first published tabletop game, Brutality Skirmish Wargame. The creative process involved with designing, playtesting, creating, editing, and publishing that game was a huge achievement in my life. My entire life, I had groups of friends who would play the board and card games that I made each week, but they were not “gamers”. They did not share my passion for game design and while they had fun, it was not the target demographic. One of the most rewarding things to ever happen to me is the success of my game Brutality Skirmish Wargame. The fact that people all around the world play my game and have fun either solo or with their friends brings a level of satisfaction that I had never felt before with my prior games. It feels like all my time, effort, and passion are richly rewarded when I hear people enjoying my game.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an independent tabletop game designer who has published (as of the time of this writing) 4 stand alone game rule sets, as well as 3 supplements for those games, and even a short story anthology set in one of my game settings. I am often fed up with the seemingly bland, creatively bankrupt, and greedy practices of some of the bigger game design studios and my rule is to always put the players first. I keep a large community of players on Facebook that share their stories, their games, and their suggestions. I keep my prices as low as possible. I don’t disqualify my customers’ purchases by re-releasing almost the same product under the guise of a “new edition” just to bump up sales. I care about the players, because I am one. Being a one-an operation allows me the dexterity needed to take care of my players, which is something the large corporations struggle with due to economic demands they have on them.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Absolutely. I love being creative and creating fictional worlds for people to enjoy. I want players to have a fun and stable game system where they can use any miniatures they want to use. I want them to be able to create the characters the way they want, unlike other games. My goal is to bring people together through tabletop gaming and do it in a way that respects the customer as well as gives them the license to make their own.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When I first published Brutality Skirmish Wargame, it was the first game I had made and I only wanted to publish it with the highest quality materials. After some feedback from players, they requested that I offer softback rule books and PDF versions of the rules. This contrasted with my personal goals because I saw those options as inferior and I only wanted my books to look the best. After some consideration, I realized that it was more important to appeal to a different customer base where they may not care about hardback covers and premium color printing. So, I released PDF and standard color softback versions so that people could choose the level of quality that suits their budget and their tastes.
