Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Scott Stokes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Scott , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
The first client I had was with Kalamazoo Contractors. The client was a contractor for Mel Zimmerman when I was doing my apprenticeship for him. Ten years later after Mel had retired I ran into who would be my first client Dennis Kohler. He offered me the opportunity to bid on a house he was doing that needed stone work. Ever since then I have bid on and completed several projects for him going on twenty-five years.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
A little about myself would be I have been doing masonry work for 35 years. I started doing masonry work for my stepdad on the weekends when I was 16 years old. We provide the following services; brick and stone veneer, block work, and concrete-flat work. We solve a majority of complex masonry problems and what sets us apart from other companies is our high call-back volume and our quality of service. I am most proud of the several work projects I have done with my local communities among those would be my completed lighthouse project at South Wenke Park and stone columns at Merril Park.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
During the 2008 recession, I pivoted to learning and doing siding work in order to keep the business afloat. Thus, is where the name Masonry and More came from.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I was a foreman for a company called Brick & Block for approximately three years. During this time I worked nights and weekends after getting off of my primary job. I took the money I made from my second job and put the funds back into purchasing equipment needed/payroll in order to start my company.
