We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Scott Mitchell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Scott, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Music is life, the universal language that anyone in the world can feel and use to communicate. To me, there is nothing more powerful than a perfectly custom-curated piece of music. It has been my greatest passion for over 30 years, and sharing that love to bring projects to life is the epitome of rewarding scenarios. That’s what I strive for, to leave a lasting emotional impact on the world.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My music journey began at age five, starting with singing and adding multiple instruments over the years. Growing up, I always wanted to be in a band, tour, put out albums and so on. In 2012, I had the opportunity to score my first film and absolutely fell in love with the process. It was in this moment that my career goals shifted course. Since then, I studied Advanced Music Production with Berklee College of Music and have had my music used in a number of shows and various other media.
I offer custom scoring for any type of visual media, production music, audio engineering, sound design, artist production and more. Honestly, although film and TV scoring is my main focus, I love hopping on other types of projects involving music.
The main problem I solve for my clients is often figuring out how to capture that perfect emotion for their project. Most of them are not musical, so I find inspiration from the visual and run with it.
When you hire me, you don’t just get great original music to support your project and nail the emotion, but someone emotionally invested in the success of anything he works on.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
For a long time, I must admit that I was very self-conscious about self-promotion. Music just seemed normal to me, so I didn’t really think that other people would find it unique or interesting.
I got over that hump at one point, and just began authentically sharing my creative process. This helped me grow my following, while also reminding people that I am present and working. They see my creative process: whether just jamming on instruments, recording, or production methods. People notice the passion behind what I’m doing and posting, which tends to draw more attention as well. Keeping this going regularly is very important too.
The main factors for building a reputation in my opinion are: passion, presence, and consistency.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Most of my clientele has come from meeting them face to face. As a freelancer, putting a face to the name is very powerful. Sure, you can cold call and send out massive amounts of emails, but I have had little success that way. There have been people I connected with on social media, that once I met them in person, it lead to their interest piquing and landing work.
Find local networking events that apply to your field and the type of client you are hoping for. Introduce yourself, learn about them and just listen. I’ve found that when I say less, people are more intrigued. Once they ask about you, they will be eager to learn about you and your craft. Be friendly, engaged and memorable.
I even fly out to California for 2-3 conferences a year, where people from all over the world come to network. These have been particularly beneficial for me. I know it’s not possible for everyone and comes at a cost, but if you can find a great conference, I recommend giving it a shot.
The best networking advice I ever received was: “Don’t approach people as a business opportunity. Make friends, and with the right friends come the right opportunities.”
