Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Scott Mitchell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Scott, appreciate you joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I actually wouldn’t change anything. I started my business in Oct of 2017. I started my business with barely enough money to buy a used laptop from Best Buy. It was the slowest computer ever. I had no idea what it actually meant to be a business owner. Before I started my company, I worked for a large Insurance company. I was able to try ideas to drum up clients everyway possible. Most failed but a few things worked that i still use today. A little over a year later, i went through a horrible divorce. Since i was the only employee, i had to work when i couldnt even get out of bed. Once it was finally resolved Covid happen. While it was a very difficult time in our lives. That year was my absolute best business wise. It finally gave a chance to be more involved with my biggest passion, community involvement. I currently serve on 2 non profit boards, mentoring and coaching basketball, and highlighting small businesses. Soon i will be rolling out a podcast highlighting so many wonderful small businesses in our community. While difficult, im thankful I started my business when i did.
Scott, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started with a big box Insurance company recommended to me by one of customers at the bank i use to work at. I am an insurance broker. So i offer Home, Auto, Life and Business Insurance. I shop around for the best prices and coverages around. I truly work for you and not the company. What sets me a part is my availability, and customer service. I started my business from scratch. Which in my industry its unheard of these days. Still standing after 5 years is a huge accomplishment for any business. Im so very proud of that. All of my customers are my family. I want to be the best person for them on their worst day.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When I started, i posted material that got very old and stale. To get more engagement i made it fun. Who doesnt like fun? I started with a food tour during covid. Then posting funny photos and everyone coming up with funny captions. Its awesome how creative people are. My advice to anyone trying to build presence is to be creative and think outside the box. Try everything, even if its uncomfortable.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I am still here because i have two amazing mentors. They probably get annoyed with all my texts and phone calls. They are an inspiration and they have talked me off the edge so many times. They are so selfess and have helped every step of the way. I recommend that everyone should find a mentor in their field, its invaluable
