We were lucky to catch up with Scott Lowery recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Scott, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I have often wondered what successful even means. I will never forget watching a video from one of the big box photography stores that featured two photographers talking about success. The first one said that she felt successful when she had a full schedule with shoots and meetings. The other photographer said he felt successful when he had extra free time to spend with his family or do a hobby. These photographers despite sharing a profession had wildly different ideas of success. It made me realize that for every different person there will be a different measure of success. So I think one of the keys to being successful is knowing what that looks like for you. You have set your own goals and work out a plan to achieve them and not be influenced by where some one else is in life because they could be on a completely different path.
Scott, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My intrest in media started when I was really young. My mom and me loved watching movies and she often shared films that inspired her as a child with me. Seeing films like 2001 Space odessy and Star wars hooked me on wanting to create something others could enjoy. But making films or taking photos in my early childhood was still pretty cost prohibitive because film was expensive. But when my dad brought home an early digital camera, complete with a floppy disk slot, I was hooked.
From that point on I was always getting my hands on a camera shooting everything from skate videos to lego stories. By the time I got to high school I was always known as the guy with the camera and was the go to for any video projects. I slowly started taking video and photo jobs on the side while in film school until my work was taking up more of my time. My film professor actually told me to quit and build up my business. Over the next decade me and my wife built up our production company becoming one of the top wedding photo and video teams in north florida and doing millions in video and photo production.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I have the unique position of having my wife as my business partner. It was the perfect fit as we both share the same position for creating and love to push each other to grow in our craft. We actually met in high school in the yearbook class. The two of us worked together through that year and she actually eventual took over as the yearbook editor when I graduated. We have been by each others side since then and I wouldn’t have it any other way. She is my biggest supporter and an insanely talented photographer.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth has been one of our main sources of getting new clients. We focus on the client expernice as a top priority for us with ever project. For us if we see our interactions with our clients as just an extension of marketing. We want to make sure that our clients are so impressed they share the content and our names with those around them.
