We recently connected with Scott Labor and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Scott thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Yes, it happened very unexpectedly. I had been painting for years but always worked a regular job and never really tried to sell much work. Around 2020 I started giving it a go. It was slow but started to build. Around 2023 I moved to Tucson from Philadelphia and had trouble finding a job, but at the same time art sales started to take off. I decided to just go with it full time see how far I can take it. A lot of ups and downs but staying consistent is the biggest step I took to speed up the process.

Scott, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born and raised in Philadelphia. I started drawing at a young age and wanted to make cartoons for a living which still feels like it shows in my paintings. I mainly create acrylic paintings and some sculptures.
Im not entirely sure what sets me apart from others but I always try to create scenes from experiences in my life which I feel like a lot of people go through at one point or another, connecting with other people is one of my greatest joys. It feels amazing to be able to express things that are very personal but relatable on a lot of levels. Im not very good with words so doing it through art makes the most sense to me.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Good art does not sell itself by Shirley Ann O’neill and Laura O’hare.
Has been the most practical book on how to take actionable steps to really get your work out there on every level.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Get out there and be as active as possible in your community, volunteer, attend art shows, make friends. Opportunities come from the most unexpected places sometimes.
