We were lucky to catch up with Scott Hewitt recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Scott, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
First dollars I ever made from production actually came from winning a competition here in Saint Louis called Fresh Produce. Fresh Produce is an 8 man elimination tournament where producers come center stage and play the best material they have for the grand prize of $500. I had been an attendant quite a few times and it wasn’t until my wife encouraged me to give it a try that I went up and after losing my first battle, on my second I ended up winning.
Scott, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was raised in a musically enthusiastic household. My mother worked as an elementary school music teacher for 25+ years and my father runs live sound at Washington University in Saint Louis but owned a recording studio for 15+ years. Primarily before I got into production I pursued being a rapper but took the advice from my father to learn how to make my own beats because simply put no one knows my sound better than me. Independently, I learned how to play the bass from my dad but through school I learned how to play the alto saxophone but made a transition into playing the tenor.
Recently I transitioned from being a rapper to just production because I just don’t have the same passion for it as much as I have passion for actually creating the music for rappers. I also experiment and make R&B and pop records. I believe the thing that separates me from most producers is the versatility and quality of sound with each genre I choose to contribute to. What I also pride myself in is not only creating music for artists but for content creators. In this new age of influencing becoming such a desired career, my aim is to give the sounds that people use for years to come.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the greatest thing is sharing the art. In my humble opinion, there’s no point in being an artist or creative if you just keep it to yourself. Real-time reactions to people receiving what you’ve made provides a feeling that can’t be duplicated. In those moments, you’re commanding the attention in the room and hate it or love it, the world is yours.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
There’s a documentary on YouTube from the (late) great Nipsey Hussle on the Marathon Clothing brand/store and it’s one of the most inspiring thing anybody can sit down to watch whether or not you’re in a creative field. The main thing I picked up was just to continue to work with what you have and opportunity will come about when you’re ready for it. Everyone has to start from “out the trunk” so to speak and as long as you can clear the trunk out, you’re making the right moves.
