Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Scott Hall. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Scott, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Completing my metaphysical rock album Aliens Angels & Monsters was very meaningful for me. Up to that point I had only released a couple of three-song EPs and two albums of children’s music with my family band Kitty Wolf.
I had been performing regularly for years but I was playing mostly covers and rarely showcasing my own songwriting talent.
When the reality of Covid lockdown sank in and it became apparent that I was going to be stuck at home for the foreseeable future, I had to do something. I’m the opposite of a couch potato, so I knew it was very important to keep myself busy or risk insanity!
That’s when I made the decision to accomplish something I would be very proud of. I wanted to be able to look back and see that I had made great use of my extra time by making a full album of my original music.
I ended up doing a lot of experimenting in my home studio. Besides playing my usual instruments, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and bass, I also tried adding new sounds to my songs with different instruments, slide guitar, cigar box guitar, synths and electronic drums. I even used a plastic tub full of pennies used for the rhythm of Box & Coin.
I also wrote my own vocal harmonies for the first time and even hired a kick-ass female vocalist to sing along with me on a few of the songs.
The result was amazing. I seriously did not know I could create such a rich recording.
Aliens Angels & Monsters would not have been possible without my talented friend Tim Delaney of Electron Gardens. I recorded most of my vocals and guitar in his studio, he played bass for me and did an awesome job of bringing it all together for the final mixes.
My album as well as my latest single Driveway are available on Spotify and all other streaming platforms.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My first attempt at songwriting involved hiding away in my bedroom to pluck at my sister’s broken-string guitar and write awful poetry about dramatic things I hadn’t experienced at the ripe old age of 14.
A couple of years later, I found the courage to start guitar lessons and, after a false start at a business degree, I ended up studying at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. I eventually graduated from Georgia State University with a bachelor’s degree in music engineering.
From the start I was a prolific songwriter and always wrote the vast majority of tunes for all the rock bands I fronted. At some point I wanted to branch out a bit and took trips to Nashville for songwriting workshops that greatly improved and expanded my capability. This gave me the confidence and musical diversity that led to being hired as a songwriter and cast member for several plays that were performed on Atlanta’s Beltline.
Fast forward to my recent move from Atlanta to Asheville North Carolina where I’ve formed a new band and began writing and recording my second Scott Hall album.
As a result of successfully pushing forward with my music career at a late age and realizing that I’ve acquired quite a bit of knowledge about songwriting and recording, I decided I wanted to help others who would like to record their original music.
I offer a Songwriting Mentorship service geared toward people who always wanted to write and record their original music but were previously too busy with careers and family.
Most people feel intimidated by recording studios and believe they aren’t good enough at singing, playing and writing. I’m trying to get the word out that you don’t have to be classically trained to write and record your own music. Self-expression is the main ingredient. Everything else can be learned or improved.
I have two Songwriting Mentorship options, a 6-month Record Your Studio Album Program, as well as hourly Songwriting Support Sessions. In both cases, I am right there with my clients, using my experience, knowledge and intuition to help support them through all worries and fears. This allows them to build confidence which results in a wonderful feeling of accomplishment in their songwriting.
For a musician, there is nothing that feels better than successfully expressing yourself through music and sharing it.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My personal goal is to always expand as a songwriter so that I can express myself more and more effortlessly with music. I’m also on a mission to help as many others as I can in accomplishing this for themselves.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love when people come up to me after a show and tell me how a particular song of mine affected them. Even if what they got out of the song wasn’t my intention, it means the song touched something personal within them. I consider myself lucky to be able to experience that.
