We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Scott Barrier. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Scott below.
Scott, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
The topic of “taking a risk” came up recently in a discussion with a young artist and another songwriter. The three of us wondered where our lives would be if we hadn’t taken the risk to chase our dreams and pursue music as a career. Each of us had a different experience and journey, but I shared with them that if i had not gone for it, I may not have had some of the amazing breakthroughs that have occurred in my career. However, they didn’t just fall in my lap. It took years of dedication and hard work developing and improving my abilities and skills as a singer/songwriter to create better music and to move up in the industry, and to build a network of great people to work with. With all that, I’ve had a approximately 100 songs recorded by artists, including two #1’s this year in 2023, and a song performed on the Grand Ole Opry! Fortunately for me, I’ve been blessed to have such wonderful things occur. Again, it wasn’t overnight, and it all came down to consistent hard work. It’s a journey of perseverance and patience, but it’s been worth it!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I didn’t get into the music industry right away, but I have always loved music and have played music and written songs since I was teen ager. I wasn’t sure for many years if I’d be good enough to have success in music and I had other jobs and career paths I took for awhile. However, my passion and love for music wouldn’t let me be, and I realized that I need to do what I love and what makes me happy. So, I joined bands in high school and college, and eventually moved to Nashville in my 20’s to pursue a career. For awhile I was a performing musician and singer/songwriter, touring with other artists and playing in many bands. When I decided to stop being a touring musician, I worked in the industry for awhile for a small label and publishing company, and I booked shows for artists. I realized that those jobs weren’t making me happy, so I decided to work on becoming a full time songwriter, and then eventually a publisher as well. Now I work with many artists and songwriters, writing and creating music full time here in Nashville Tennessee.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There are various organizations that provide services and guidance to help singers, songwriter, artists, etc, to build their careers, such as NSAI, Global Songwriters Connection, etc. I was aware of these type of business and organizations when i moved to Nashville, but I didn’t join them for quiet a while. I should have. They would have helped me network, build my skills sets, and move faster in my career. I recommend to anyone pursuing your career to consider joining these organizations when you’re first starting out to help give you building blocks you will need to build your career.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of my music career is, of course, creating music that is shared with the world. It makes me happy to touch other people’s lives through music, and to hopefully make their lives better in some way. The other most rewarding part of music career is the relationships I have with so many amazing and talented people. It’s a wonderful experience to create music with other people who have the same passions and dreams. I love being part of their journey, and I love being part of helping artists and other songwriters become successful and making their dreams come true.
