We were lucky to catch up with Scott Barnett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Scott, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Recently I have been working on a PBS documentary about the history of policing and race in the development of the City of Miami. As a native of Miami, I have always been interested in the hidden story of this City, its roots, and the people that were responsible for its development as a major center of commerce and industry. Most know Miami as a leading tourist destination not realizing the significant role it played in the modern civil rights movement. The City was incorporated in 1896 with representation by Black and Bahamian laborers, something that would be quickly taken away by the harsh laws of Jim Crow and the segregated South that had a strong foothold in Florida since Reconstruction. The documentary is called Crossing Overtown and explores history on the other side of the tracks, as the Flagler railroad would come to define a racial color line that could not be crossed from its earliest days, yet it would be the people of Overtown bounded in by these tracks who would come to define a new approach to community involved policing. Miami had a tumultuous history of violence and protests throughout the 20th Century, yet it would be the people descended from the original founders who would play a major part in the success of this City. My role as the Producer and Director is to collect the testimonies of those who witnessed this history, including expert historians and civil rights advocates who have transformed the City into a relevant model of justice for the rest of the country.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Our turn-key style of production includes a thorough process of pre-production and consultation with clients to understand the best way to communicate their brand needs. We conduct all casting, location scouting, pre-visualization, production and post-production as a full package in order to maintain a coherent, interactive process that focuses on shared goals. We are uniquely able to scale our productions based on the relevant needs therein, yet our pedigree was born of the traditional filmmaking process with an adherence to high production values and quality content creation. We always find the most relevant solution for projects of every size.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As the media landscape continues to change, it is important to find ways to apply your skills through new platforms or technological advances. When I started my career we were still working in the medium of film negative which eventually transformed to videotape editorial. As digital content developed into more advanced spaces, it was crucial that I update my skills with relevant software applications for editorial and design for the modern century. We still shoot and point the camera the same way, in fact the process of non-linear editorial has more in common with traditional film than the linear focused tape mediums of the past. We all know how relevant social media has become and it is important to discuss formatting and distribution with clients well before the production begins. However our adherence to high production value is what sets our content apart, and we are able to utilize the skills we learned from the traditional filmmaking process that allow us the deliver a quality, cinematic style. Right now we are working with our clients to transform mediums for streaming services that offer new platforms, and an infinite number of segmentations, it’s now just a matter of knowing your audience, and more importantly having your audience know you.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My business partner is also my life partner, Johanna Vega is the Executive Producer of Fuxion, we met in Costa Rica where she was working in film production in her native country. It is rare to meet someone that you can spend your life with as well as find a relevant way to work together professionally. It definitely makes life easier as we are able to travel together on production and experience some of the wonders of the world that this business allows. We have a very complimentary relationship and we are able to support one another through the various challenges that ultimately come one way or another. I couldn’t do this without my better half.
